Position Overview
This Laboratory Technician/Specialist role provides technical support to faculty members, researchers, and students in operating and maintaining advanced analytical instruments, particularly HPLC/UHPLC, GC-MS, and LC-MS/MS systems. You will support the preparation and delivery of undergraduate and postgraduate practical laboratory sessions, train users in safe instrument operation, maintain laboratory readiness, and ensure compliance with departmental safety and quality requirements.

Key Responsibilities
Analytical Instrumentation
- Operate and provide technical support for HPLC/UHPLC, GC-MS, LC-MS/MS, and related instruments
- Assist with sample preparation, instrument setup, method implementation, and data acquisition
- Develop and maintain SOPs, instrument-use protocols, checklists, and logbooks
- Conduct routine calibration, performance verification, and preventive maintenance
- Troubleshoot technical problems and coordinate repairs with suppliers and service engineers
- Manage instrument software, user access, and analytical data storage and backup
- Maintain adequate inventories of columns, gases, solvents, standards, and consumables
Teaching Laboratory Support
- Prepare chemicals, reagents, standards, samples, and instructional materials for Food Science courses
- Set up laboratories before practical sessions and ensure equipment readiness
- Provide technical assistance during laboratory classes in food chemistry, analysis, and safety
- Assist faculty in demonstrating analytical procedures and correct equipment use
- Support safe handling, labeling, storage, and disposal of chemicals and lab waste
- Restore laboratories after sessions and maintain clean, organized work areas
Training and User Support
- Train students, researchers, and staff in the safe operation of HPLC, GC-MS, and LC-MS/MS equipment
- Provide instruction on sample preparation, instrument startup/shutdown, and troubleshooting
- Maintain training records and verify user authorization before independent instrument access
- Promote good laboratory practices and research-data integrity
Laboratory Safety and Compliance
- Support implementation of departmental laboratory safety policies
- Maintain chemical inventories, Safety Data Sheets, and risk assessments
- Monitor PPE, spill kits, chemical storage, and waste containers
- Assist with laboratory inspections, safety audits, and incident reporting
- Ensure compliance with chemical safety, biosafety, and waste disposal requirements
Qualifications & Requirements
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Food Science, Analytical Chemistry, Chemistry, Biochemistry, or a closely related discipline
- Relevant practical experience operating and maintaining HPLC and at least one mass-spectrometry platform (GC-MS or LC-MS)
- Experience in sample preparation, chromatographic analysis, instrument calibration, and basic troubleshooting
- Knowledge of laboratory safety, chemical management, and good laboratory practices
- Strong organizational, documentation, and communication skills
- Ability to communicate effectively in English and collaborate across faculty, students, and technical staff
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Food Science, Analytical Chemistry, Chemistry, or a related discipline
- Hands-on experience with HPLC/UHPLC, GC-MS, and LC-MS/MS in food, environmental, or pharmaceutical analysis
- Experience with instrument software, method development, and validation
- Experience in a university, research, or accredited laboratory setting
- Previous experience training students or laboratory users
- Familiarity with laboratory quality systems, procurement, and vendor coordination
