Position Overview
As a Senior Lab Technician — Chemistry at Halliburton in Abu Dhabi, you will operate under general direction to perform assigned laboratory duties in full accordance with the chemical hygiene plan and current HSE laboratory safety standards. You will conduct both routine and non-routine laboratory tests — selecting appropriate test equipment and instrumentation, operating laboratory and rig equipment, building or modifying prototypes and special equipment as required, and performing complex environmental tests. You will calibrate, repair, and maintain laboratory tools and equipment, collect data, document test results, and assist in preparing technical reports. Senior-level responsibilities also include mentoring and training lower-level technicians, sharing your expertise and safety knowledge with the wider laboratory team. This role sits within Halliburton’s Cementing Product Service Line — one of the most technically demanding and commercially significant segments of the global oilfield services business.
Key Job Duties & Responsibilities
Laboratory Testing & Analysis
- Perform assigned laboratory tests under general direction — both routine procedures and non-routine prototype or laboratory testing — selecting appropriate test equipment and instrumentation for each task as required.
- Conduct complex environmental tests using proficient techniques with electrical/electronic, chemical, and mechanical equipment — including full set-up, calibration, trouble-shooting, monitoring, and data collection phases of each test.
- Operate laboratory equipment, pumps, and rig equipment as required to execute assigned tasks in Halliburton’s Abu Dhabi Cementing laboratory operations.
- Build and/or modify non-routine prototypes, models, and special equipment as required to support test execution and laboratory development activities.
Equipment Maintenance, Calibration & HSE
- Repair, calibrate, and provide general maintenance on laboratory tools and equipment — maintaining accurate calibration records and ensuring all instruments are functioning to the required specification.
- Follow all prescribed safety rules and regulations in performing assigned duties in full accordance with the chemical hygiene plan and current HSE laboratory safety standards at all times.
- Maintain comprehensive files and documentation related to test equipment — including calibration logs, maintenance records, and any equipment modification documentation required by Halliburton’s quality and compliance systems.
Data Collection, Reporting & Team Development
- Collect data, document test results, and assist in preparing technical reports and other documentation — ensuring all laboratory outputs are accurate, properly recorded, and delivered to the appropriate stakeholders on time.
- Assist and train lower-level laboratory technicians in safety procedures, laboratory practices, and technical skills — leveraging your senior experience to build team capability and uphold safety standards across the lab.
- Ensure that all job tasks are performed correctly to positively impact cost containment, efficiency, profitability, and operations — understanding that consequences of errors must be measured, managed, and contained.
Qualifications & Requirements
Education
- Eight (8) hours of college chemistry preferred — a foundational academic background in chemistry or a related scientific discipline that supports the technical demands of this senior laboratory role at Halliburton.
- Relevant technical certifications, vocational qualifications, or professional training in laboratory science, chemical testing, or oilfield services technology are considered supplementary qualifications.
Experience Requirements
- Minimum 5 years of related laboratory testing experience — the core experience requirement for this Senior Lab Technician role. Hands-on, practical laboratory testing experience in chemistry, energy, or a related technical field is essential.
- Demonstrable expertise in operating laboratory equipment, conducting routine and non-routine chemical tests, calibrating instruments, and collecting and documenting scientific data in a professional industrial or oilfield services setting.
Technical Skills
- Proficiency in electrical/electronic, chemical, and mechanical testing equipment — including the ability to set up, calibrate, troubleshoot, monitor, and collect data across complex environmental and chemistry test scenarios.
- Strong understanding of HSE laboratory safety standards, chemical hygiene procedures, and safe laboratory practices as applied in the global oilfield services industry.
- Good communication and documentation skills — able to clearly record test results, prepare technical reports, and communicate findings and safety requirements to team members and supervisors.
