Position Overview
As Software Engineer – Edge, you develop core components of the Heartbeat AI Enterprise energy management system, both locally on IoT gateways and in a cloud-native backend. You write high-performance Go for edge controllers and lightweight Lua scripts and protocol drivers for inverters, battery storage (BESS) and HVAC systems. You also build Go microservices that process time-series data and telemetry and manage fleets across hundreds of customer sites, and you connect local assets to the virtual power plant so they can respond to spot market prices.
Why This Role Matters: Solar, storage, heat pumps and EV charging are being steered as one system, and the software at the edge is what makes that work. This role puts you at the point where code meets real hardware, in a fast-growing company building what it calls Europe’s largest decentralised virtual power plant.
Key Responsibilities
Edge & Gateway Development
- Build core components of Heartbeat AI Enterprise, on IoT gateways and in the cloud
- Write high-performance Go for edge controllers, including system services and communication layers
- Create Lua control scripts and protocol drivers for inverters, BESS and HVAC systems
Cloud & Protocols
- Design and program scalable Go microservices for time-series data, telemetry and fleet management across hundreds of sites
- Implement MQTT, REST/gRPC and Modbus TCP/RTU communication
Integration & Teamwork
- Enable data flow between local assets (meter values, flexibility) and the virtual power plant for control by spot market prices
- Work in a cross-functional team with system architects, PLC developers and product management to ship features for commercial energy management
Qualifications
Education
- Degree in computer science, software engineering or a comparable qualification, or solid professional software development experience
Experience & Skills
- Very good Go skills, ideally in cloud and microservice settings, plus hands-on Lua experience, e.g. for embedded or edge use
- Solid knowledge of cloud platforms (AWS, GCP or Azure), Docker, Kubernetes and CI/CD
- Experience with IoT or edge computing, preferably on Linux systems such as Raspberry Pi or industrial PCs
- Confident with MQTT and REST, ideally some contact with Modbus
Personal & Language
- Structured, solution-oriented way of working and motivation to help build Europe’s largest decentralised virtual power plant
- Fluent German and English, written and spoken
