Why This Front-End Developer Role at ASRC Federal Stands Out

Mission-Driven Work: Your code supports geospatial workflows that matter — the kind of mapping tools government teams rely on to make informed decisions

Specialized Skill Set: Few front-end roles let you work deeply with the ArcGIS JavaScript API 4.x in a clean Vanilla JavaScript architecture — a niche that builds valuable, hard-to-replace expertise

Remote Flexibility: Work remotely while collaborating with back-end developers, analysts, and GIS specialists on a focused, purposeful product

Career Growth: Geospatial front-end developers can move toward Senior Developer, GIS Solutions Architect, Technical Lead, and Engineering Manager roles in the growing federal technology and GIS sector

Position Overview

The Front-End Developer at ASRC Agile Decision Sciences designs, builds, and maintains a web-based mapping application that supports mission-critical geospatial workflows. You will develop, enhance, and maintain front-end geospatial web applications using a solid Vanilla JavaScript architecture; implement and customize mapping functionality with the ArcGIS JavaScript API 4.x; work with back-end developers, analysts, and GIS specialists to bring spatial data and services together; troubleshoot and tune front-end performance, usability, and map rendering; support MS SQL Server ETL processes by understanding existing data pipelines and adjusting them when needed; take part in code reviews and architecture discussions; and write clear technical documentation for applications, workflows, and data processes.

Why This Role Matters: A map is only useful if it loads quickly, behaves predictably, and shows the right data at the right moment. As Front-End Developer, you are the person who turns complex spatial data into an interface that analysts and decision-makers can actually use. Every performance fix, rendering improvement, and carefully structured module you write makes the application more reliable — and helps the people who depend on it do their work with confidence.

Key Responsibilities

Geospatial Front-End Development

  • Develop, enhance, and maintain front-end geospatial web applications using a robust, well-organized Vanilla JavaScript architecture
  • Implement and customize mapping functionality with the ArcGIS JavaScript API 4.x — layers, widgets, popups, and interactions that fit real mission workflows
  • Write clean, modular code that other developers can read, test, and extend without friction

Performance, Usability & Map Rendering

  • Troubleshoot and optimize front-end performance, usability, and map rendering behavior — keeping the application responsive even with demanding spatial datasets
  • Track down rendering issues, slow layers, and interface problems, then fix them at the root rather than patching symptoms

Collaboration & Data Integration

  • Collaborate with back-end developers, analysts, and GIS specialists to integrate spatial data and services into the application
  • Take part in code reviews, architectural discussions, and best-practice development processes that keep the codebase healthy

SQL Server ETL Support

  • Support MS SQL Server ETL processes — understand existing data pipelines and modify them when needed so the front end always receives accurate, timely data

Documentation

  • Prepare clear technical documentation for applications, workflows, and data processes so knowledge is shared across the team and not locked in one person’s head

 Qualifications & Requirements

Education & Experience

  • A bachelor’s degree in a related field and 4+ years of experience
  • Demonstrable experience writing clean, modular, well-structured JavaScript, including designing applications in Vanilla JavaScript without heavy frameworks
  • Hands-on experience building geospatial applications with the ArcGIS JavaScript API 4.x
  • Working knowledge of SQL Server ETL workflows and the ability to modify or maintain existing processes

Technical & Soft Skills

  1. Experience with version control systems such as Git, and an understanding of modern web technologies (HTML5, CSS3, Webpack, Node.js, and similar tools)
  2. Ability to work well in a team and communicate clearly with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
  3. Strong problem-solving skills and close attention to detail
