Position Overview

This Refineries Analyst at Kpler maintains data integrity, capacity, and offline event records for individual refinery models and regional balances using the internal Linear Programming model for tuning, prioritises validation and improvement of existing models, leads backtesting and guiding of models using external data sources including EIA, JODI, IRR, and ANP, applies deep understanding of distillation, reforming, FCC, and blending to optimise refinery circuit views and regional supply/demand dynamics, sources and leverages large datasets using Python and PostgreSQL to automate data flows, collaborates with Data, Product, Engineering, and Sales teams, and responds to internal and external data requests and client queries.

Why This Role Matters: As Refineries Analyst at Kpler in Dubai, you are the subject matter expert whose engineering and modelling expertise directly determines the accuracy and value of refinery intelligence consumed by energy companies, governments, and trading organisations worldwide — owning bottom-up LP refinery models, validating outputs against EIA, JODI, and physical market realities, and partnering with Product Engineering to build Kpler’s most sophisticated fundamental datasets during an exciting period of global platform expansion.

Key Responsibilities

LP Model Maintenance, Tuning & Data Integrity

  • Maintain data integrity, capacity, and offline event records for individual refinery models and regional balances using the internal LP model for tuning
  • Prioritise validation and improvement of existing models — data quality and domain expertise are the critical drivers for this role
  • Apply deep understanding of distillation, reforming, FCC, and blending to optimise refinery circuit views and regional supply/demand dynamics

External Data Integration & Backtesting

  • Lead backtesting and model guidance using external data sources — EIA, JODI, IRR, and ANP — to ensure outputs align with physical market realities
  • Source and leverage large datasets using Python and PostgreSQL to automate data flows and improve model accuracy
  • Connect upstream inputs and offline events with real-world refinery capacities and yields for Kpler’s Supply & Demand balances

Cross-Functional Collaboration & Client Support

Essential Experience & Qualifications

Essential Requirements

  • 3–5+ years of experience as a Refinery Economist, Refining Analyst, LP Modeler, or related role
  • Deep understanding of physical refinery unit operations — Distillation, Reforming, FCC, Blending — and refinery economics including flows, pricing, regulations, and arbitrage
  • Practical experience with industry-standard LP software — Aspen PIMS, AVEVA Unified/Spiral, or Haverly GRTMPS — essential for this role
  • Proficiency in Python and PostgreSQL for data sourcing and automation
  • Proven experience sourcing and leveraging external data (EIA/JODI/IRR) to model refineries
  • Strong background in data-driven modelling, validation, and input data integrity management

Desirable Qualifications

  • Experience with refinery optimisation — especially circuit-wide views
  • Experience with data visualisation tools
  • Past experience contributing to SaaS product or data improvement initiatives
  • Experience leveraging AI tools (Claude, Cursor, etc.) for data analysis and workflow optimisation
  • Bachelor’s Degree in a technical or quantitative field with proven modelling experience
