Career Growth: Clear progression from Dredging Superintendent toward Dredging Works Manager, Project Director, and senior marine operations leadership roles across the GCC and global dredging market
Position Overview
This Dredging Superintendent role in Abu Dhabi covers the full scope of on-site dredging project management — from providing input to the detailed project plan and ensuring execution as planned, through managing daily dredging activities, delegating to dredge supervisors and senior dredge masters, analysing daily reports, assessing performance, identifying risks and mitigations, monitoring and controlling subcontractors, coordinating staffing, ensuring cross-team cooperation, and delivering weekly progress reports to the Works Manager covering milestones, budget, issues, and planning. The role demands both strong technical dredging knowledge and practical leadership ability in a demanding marine project environment.
Why This Role Matters: As Dredging Superintendent in Abu Dhabi, you are the operational backbone of a dredging and reclamation project — the person whose daily decisions about dredger positioning, cutter selection, pipeline routing, pick point management, and crew allocation directly determine whether the project hits its production targets, stays within budget, and meets the environmental and quality standards that the contract and the client demand, apply in-depth knowledge of dredging processes and equipment — cutter suction dredgers, cutter types, pipeline systems, land reclamation methodology, and the ability to transform raw CSV-file dredging data into clear, actionable conclusions — in a UAE market where project scale and technical complexity are consistently at the highest end of what the global dredging industry encounters, lead a dredging crew — delegating to dredge supervisors and senior dredge masters, reading and acting on their daily reports, identifying performance gaps and efficiency improvement opportunities, and building the kind of problem-solving culture across the project team that keeps operations moving even when conditions change unexpectedly, manage subcontractors with the technical credibility and contractual awareness needed to evaluate their performance against the project plan, identify risks early, and escalate or mitigate before those risks affect schedule or budget, and build a Dredging Superintendent career credential in Abu Dhabi’s world-class marine construction market — where the scale of projects, the rigour of HSE requirements, and the international profile of major contractors create a career platform that is recognized across the global dredging and marine engineering industry.
Key Responsibilities
Day-to-Day Dredging Management & Project Planning
- Manage and take full responsibility for day-to-day dredging activities on the project — ensuring all operations are executed safely, efficiently, and in line with the project plan
- Provide the Dredging Works Manager with input for the development of the detailed project plan — and ensure that dredging activities are executed as per the agreed plan
- Provide weekly reports to the Works Manager covering milestones achieved, work completed, progress status, budget position, active issues, and forward planning
- Coordinate and plan optimal staffing for all dredging-related activities — ensuring the right people are in the right roles at the right times throughout the project lifecycle
Team Leadership — Dredge Supervisors & Senior Dredge Masters
- Delegate specific responsibilities to dredge supervisors and senior dredge masters — and analyse their daily reports to track operational performance and production progress
- Assess team performance and suggest targeted efficiency improvement activities — identifying where production can be increased, downtime reduced, or dredging methodology optimised
- Identify operational risks and appropriate mitigation strategies — escalating to the Works Manager where necessary before risks materially affect the project
- Spread a problem-solving mindset across the project team — creating a culture where issues are surfaced and resolved quickly rather than escalated without suggested solutions
Subcontractor Control & Stakeholder Coordination
- Monitor, evaluate, and control the activities of subcontractors — ensuring their work meets project quality, schedule, HSE, and contractual standards throughout
- Ensure cooperation between all project team members and smooth data and information transfer to internal stakeholders and, where applicable, external parties
- Cooperate constructively, efficiently, and effectively with Technical, QA/HSE, Estimation, and Operational Advisory departments to ensure integrated project delivery
- Link survey results — calculations, heights, benchmarks, charts, and tolerances — to contractual implications and communicate relevant findings to the project team and client
Technical Data Analysis, HSE & Environmental Standards
- Transform raw dredging data (CSV files, loggings) into readable formats — interpreting this data and drawing relevant, actionable conclusions to inform operational decisions
- Implement appropriate dredging methodologies for the specific project conditions — cutter types, pick points, pipeline configurations, and reclamation sequencing
- Ensure high quality, safety, and environmental standards are maintained across all dredging and reclamation activities in compliance with Abu Dhabi regulatory requirements
- Apply analytical capability to interpret survey results in relation to contractual implications — ensuring operational decisions are grounded in accurate progress and quantity assessment
Qualifications & Requirements
Educational Requirements
- Engineering Master’s or Bachelor’s degree, or an equivalent professional qualification in a relevant engineering discipline (REQUIRED)
- PMP (Project Management Professional) certification is an asset and will strengthen the application
Experience Requirements
- Minimum 5 years of experience on dredging projects in a relevant operational or supervisory role (REQUIRED)
- In-depth understanding of dredging processes, dredging equipment, land reclamation, pipelines, cutter types, pick points, and associated dredging methodology
- Demonstrated ability to transform raw dredging data (CSV files, loggings) into readable formats and to draw relevant conclusions from the converted data
- Ability to link survey results — calculations, heights, benchmarks, charts, and tolerances — to contractual implications
Leadership & Personal Competencies
- Strong leadership capabilities — able to delegate, manage performance, and motivate a dredging crew across a demanding marine project environment
- Ability to interact effectively with crew members, dredge supervisors, and senior dredge masters at an operational level
- Ability to take responsibility and suggest decisions based on both known and unknown project conditions
- Ability to work autonomously with a problem-solving mind — and to spread that attitude across the project team
- Strong analytical capability and excellent communication for internal and external stakeholder reporting
