Position Overview
This International CDI/Coding Consulting Specialist role involves conducting retrospective chart reviews to assess accuracy, completeness, and specificity of clinical documentation, applying ICD-10 code sets and DRG classification systems to identify documentation and coding gaps. You will shadow physicians, coders, and CDI staff, interview key stakeholders, evaluate hospital CDI process effectiveness, develop structured queries, compile audit findings into actionable reports, and conduct knowledge transfer sessions to educate client teams on documentation best practices.

 Key Responsibilities
Clinical Documentation Review
- Conduct retrospective chart reviews (inpatient and/or outpatient) to assess documentation accuracy and specificity
- Apply knowledge of ICD-10 code sets, procedure code sets, and DRG classification systems to identify gaps
- Apply medical terminology and procedure review to assess clinical documentation opportunities
Stakeholder Engagement & Process Evaluation
- Shadow physicians, coders, and CDI staff to understand current workflows and documentation practices
- Interview key stakeholders including CDI team, coding team, clinicians, and department heads
- Evaluate the effectiveness of hospital CDI processes and identify areas for improvement
Reporting & Knowledge Transfer
- Develop structured queries and feedback where clarification or additional documentation is needed
- Compile audit findings into clear, actionable reports including gaps, risks, and recommendations
- Conduct knowledge transfer sessions to educate client teams on documentation and compliance best practices
- Attend meetings with key stakeholders to review findings and discuss recommendations
Collaboration & Confidentiality
- Collaborate with the project management team to ensure consistency and quality across engagements
- Maintain strict confidentiality and data security in handling patient records and hospital information
- Participate in aggregating data trends and audit findings for management and executive-level reports
Qualifications & Requirements
Educational Requirements
- Associate’s Degree or higher in nursing (BSN preferred), medicine, paramedical sciences, or a related clinical field, or a degree in Health Information Management (RHIA, RHIT, or other coding certification)
Experience Requirements
- Minimum 3 years of Clinical Documentation Integrity (CDI) or clinical coding experience
- Valid CDI Certification (CCDS, CDIP, or equivalent) preferred and/or 3+ years in a CDI or coding-related hospital position
Essential Skills
- Strong understanding of ICD-10 coding classification, DRG methodologies, and clinical coding principles
- Experience reviewing and querying clinical documentation
- Ability to conduct structured interviews and workflow observations with hospital staff
- Proficiency in writing audit summaries and presenting findings professionally
- Knowledge of abstracting/encoding software, DRG grouper software, and hospital information systems (HIS)
- Fluency in written and spoken English; proficiency with Microsoft Office suite
Additional Qualifications
- Certification in coding (AAPC, HIMAA, AHIMA, or equivalent)
- Certification in Health Information Management (RHIA, RHIT, CHIM, or equivalent)
- Experience in a consulting, audit, or third-party CDI service model
- Familiarity with EMRs and CDI tools, and background delivering training or knowledge transfer
- Additional languages welcomed: Arabic, Dutch, Frenc
