Position Overview
The Laboratory Technician at Petrochem Performance Chemicals (PPC) in Abu Dhabi assists the Laboratory Manager and Supervisors in all aspects of drilling fluids laboratory operations — including QA/QC testing of drilling fluid chemicals such as barite, bentonite, and bio-polymers; mixing and testing WBM (Water Base Mud) and SOBM (Synthetic Oil Base Mud) systems; conducting chemical, physical, and electrical analysis using instruments including HTHP viscometers, API filter press, Fann viscometers, and Malvern Mastersizer; performing cuttings testing, corrosion coupon testing, and sag testing; preparing technical service reports; supporting R&D and new product development; and maintaining ISO QMS documentation — all in support of PPC’s field operations and tender technical requirements across the Middle East and Caspian.
Why This Role Matters: As Laboratory Technician at PPC Abu Dhabi, your drilling fluid analysis results directly inform the technical decisions made by field engineers drilling wells across the UAE, Iraq, Kuwait, and Yemen. Your HTHP viscometer readings, WBM and SOBM property measurements, barite and bentonite QA/QC results, and cuttings test data are the scientific backbone that enables PPC’s engineers to optimize drilling fluid performance, win competitive tenders, develop new products, and protect the safety and efficiency of oilfield operations across the Middle East and Caspian region.
Key Responsibilities
QA/QC — Drilling Fluid Chemicals & Mud Systems
- Perform comprehensive QA/QC testing of drilling fluid chemicals — including barite, bentonite, bio-polymers, starch, and other mud additives — evaluating incoming goods (GRN samples), pre-shipment chemicals, and new chemical products against applicable quality specifications and company standards
- Mix and prepare WBM (Water Base Mud) and SOBM (Synthetic Oil Base Mud) systems at defined concentrations — ensuring accurate preparation in line with prescribed formulations for laboratory testing, tender evaluation, and R&D project purposes
- Conduct full chemical and physical analysis of mud systems — measuring and recording viscosity, mud weight, pH, yield point, electrical stability, fluid loss, filter cake thickness, chloride content, calcium, magnesium, total hardness, alkalinity (Pf, Mf, Pm), lime content, and MBT test values on both WBM and SOBM systems under varying temperature and pressure conditions
Specialized Testing — Cuttings, Corrosion & Sag
- Conduct a comprehensive range of cuttings testing procedures — including Hot Roll Dispersion Test, Cuttings Cleaning assessment, Accretion Test, Cuttings Hardness Test, and Cuttings Activity measurement by hygrometer — providing critical data on drilling fluid-formation interaction performance
- Perform corrosion coupon testing and sag testing — evaluating fluid stability and corrosion inhibition performance under representative downhole conditions relevant to PPC’s oilfield services clients in the UAE and across the Middle East
- Test and evaluate well clean-up additives — assessing effectiveness for wellbore cleanup and filter cake removal applications across the range of mud systems used by PPC’s field operations teams
Equipment Operation, Calibration & Maintenance
- Operate, calibrate, and maintain a comprehensive range of specialist drilling fluids laboratory instruments — including HTHP Viscometer (Fann), Malvern Mastersizer, LISST Particle Size Analyzers, OFITE and Fann Viscometers, Brookfield LVDV-II/III, PPT Permeability Plugging Testers, Lubricity Testers, HTHP and API Filter Press, Centrifuges, pH meters, Conductivity Meters, and Hygrometers
- Maintain accurate, up-to-date calibration records for all laboratory instruments — ensuring all equipment holds current calibration certificates and any out-of-tolerance instruments are removed from service and repaired promptly
- Perform routine preventive maintenance and cleaning of laboratory equipment — maintaining all instruments in optimal working condition and coordinating with maintenance teams for repairs beyond in-house capability
Technical Reporting, R&D & Tender Support
- Write detailed Technical Service Reports of laboratory test findings — compiling, analyzing, and interpreting results clearly and accurately for both internal stakeholders and external PPC customers, and submitting completed reports to the Laboratory Manager
- Prepare tender formulation reports — analyzing mud properties under varying temperature and pressure conditions to support competitive tender submissions and new client acquisition activities across PPC’s Middle East and Caspian territory
- Contribute to R&D and new product/method development projects — supporting the development of innovative drilling fluid formulations, new testing methodologies, and product improvements that enhance PPC’s technical service offering
ISO QMS Documentation, HSE & Training
- Maintain and update all ISO documentation and QMS records in the laboratory — ensuring all quality management system documentation is accurate, current, and audit-ready in full accordance with PPC’s ISO certification requirements
- Prepare and update MSDS, product bulletins, and specifications for newly developed products — and maintain MSDS records for all existing PPC products in the laboratory database
- Follow all HSE policies, procedures, and workplace safety standards — ensuring safe handling of all chemicals and drilling fluid materials in the laboratory, maintaining a clean and hazard-free working environment at all times
- Provide practical on-the-job training to Field Engineers, Technicians, and newly hired Laboratory Technicians on laboratory test procedures, equipment operation, and data interpretation — building technical capability across PPC’s operations teams
Qualifications & Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in Organic Chemistry, General Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or an equivalent scientific engineering discipline
- Minimum 1–3 years of laboratory experience in an oilfield services, drilling fluids, chemical manufacturing, or related industrial laboratory environment
- Working knowledge of WBM and SOBM drilling fluid systems — chemical composition, mixing procedures, property testing, and troubleshooting
- Familiarity with ISO QMS principles, quality documentation, and laboratory QA/QC practices applicable to oilfield chemical services
- Competence in operating specialist laboratory equipment — particularly drilling fluids instruments including HTHP viscometers, API filter presses, and particle size analyzers
- Strong HSE awareness — commitment to safe chemical handling, workplace safety compliance, and MSDS record management
