Position Overview
As a Medical Laboratory Technologist at M42’s Abu Dhabi BioBank, you will take primary responsibility for the complete lifecycle management of cord blood units and maternal blood samples — from safe receipt and initial processing through cryopreservation, long-term storage, and comprehensive documentation. Your daily work will include cord blood volume reduction, cryoprotectant addition, controlled-rate freezing, and the long-term cryogenic storage of cord blood products under stringent quality control conditions. You will perform quality control testing, specimen analysis, sample preparation, equipment calibration, temperature monitoring, and maintain full compliance with AABB, FACT, FDA, and NMDP standards. This is a senior laboratory role that requires both deep technical expertise and a strong commitment to regulatory compliance, precision documentation, and continuous professional development in cellular therapy and cord blood banking.
Key Responsibilities
Cord Blood Processing & Cryopreservation
- Receive, process, test, and cryopreserve cord blood units and maternal blood samples in full accordance with established standard operating procedures and international cord blood banking standards.
- Perform cord blood volume reduction, cryoprotectant addition, controlled-rate freezing, and the long-term storage of cord blood products under strict cryogenic conditions and temperature monitoring protocols.
- Ensure all cord blood products are accurately labelled, stored, and tracked through comprehensive donor and laboratory record management — maintaining complete traceability from collection to storage.
Quality Control, Testing & Equipment Management
- Conduct quality control testing, specimen analysis, and sample preparation — applying rigorous scientific methods to ensure all test results are accurate, reproducible, and meet the required quality benchmarks for cellular therapy products.
- Perform equipment calibration, preventive maintenance, and temperature monitoring across all laboratory instruments — ensuring all tools and systems are functioning correctly and documented according to laboratory quality management standards.
- Maintain full compliance with AABB, FACT, FDA, and NMDP standards — as well as applicable UAE laboratory safety requirements and DOH regulatory guidelines across all processing and storage activities.
Documentation & Professional Development
- Ensure accurate and complete maintenance of all donor and laboratory records — including processing logs, quality control records, temperature charts, and any incident or deviation documentation required by regulatory standards.
- Participate actively in continuous professional development — completing a minimum of 10 hours of annual education in cord blood banking, cellular therapy, transfusion medicine, donor safety, or related disciplines as required by the role.
- Contribute to the safe manufacture and storage of cellular therapy products — applying your expertise in genomics, biobanking, and precision medicine to support M42’s mission of advancing population health and scientific discovery.
Qualifications & Requirements
Education & Licensure
- Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Laboratory Sciences or a related scientific discipline — from an accredited Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT) programme recognised by relevant UAE and international health authorities.
- DOH licensure or eligibility in Hematology, Blood Transfusion, Immunology, or a related specialty — a mandatory requirement for practice as a Medical Laboratory Technologist in Abu Dhabi, UAE.
Experience Requirements
- Minimum 3 years of relevant laboratory experience — hands-on professional experience in medical laboratory science, with demonstrated competency in testing, documentation, and quality management.
- Experience in cord blood banking, stem cell processing, cellular therapy, blood banking, or transfusion services is strongly preferred and will significantly strengthen your application.
- Flow Cytometry experience is required — the ability to operate, maintain, and interpret results from flow cytometers is an essential technical competency for this laboratory role.
- Experience with HLA Typing using Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) is preferred — candidates with NGS laboratory experience will have a strong advantage in the selection process.
Knowledge & Personal Skills
- Sound knowledge of international cellular therapy and cord blood banking standards — including AABB, FACT, FDA, NMDP, and applicable UAE regulatory frameworks governing biobank operations.
- Strong communication, organisational, and teamwork skills — able to work effectively within a multidisciplinary health science team, maintain accurate records, and communicate findings clearly to laboratory supervisors and clinical partners.
