Position Overview
The Agriculture Specialist at The Pictsweet Company is a hands-on, technically demanding, and genuinely rewarding field-based career role at the heart of American vegetable farming in Tennessee. As the Ag Specialist, you will be the go-to technical expert for the farm team — responsible for inspecting all crops across Pictsweet’s Dyersburg-area farms, making expert pesticide recommendations, managing all RUP, WPS, and SDS regulatory records, supervising soil sampling programs, directing fertilizer strategies, and overseeing field research activities involving new agricultural products and practices.
This is not a desk-based role. The Agriculture Specialist at Pictsweet works in the field — assessing crop health with your own eyes, making real-time recommendations that directly affect yield quality and harvest success, and ensuring that every regulatory and food safety standard governing American vegetable production is met without exception. Key Responsibilities
Crop Inspection & Pesticide Management
- Conduct thorough and systematic inspection of all crops across Pictsweet’s Dyersburg-area farms — assessing plant health, disease pressure, pest activity, and overall crop development at every growth stage
- Make expert, evidence-based pesticide recommendations for crop protection based on inspection findings, pest identification, economic threshold assessments, and integrated pest management (IPM) principles
- Research all currently available and newly registered pesticides — staying current with EPA registrations, Tennessee state label requirements, and Pictsweet’s approved pesticide program
- Maintain complete, accurate, and compliant records for all Restricted Use Pesticides (RUP), Worker Protection Standard (WPS) requirements, and Safety Data Sheets (SDS) in accordance with federal and state regulations
Soil Sampling & Fertilizer Program Management
- Supervise comprehensive soil sampling programs across all farm fields — coordinating sample collection, submission to accredited laboratories, and professional interpretation of soil analysis results
- Develop and recommend evidence-based fertilizer programs based on soil test results, crop nutrient requirements, yield goals, and environmental stewardship principles
- Monitor crop nutrient status through tissue sampling, visual assessment, and yield data analysis — adjusting fertilizer recommendations in-season to optimize crop performance and input efficiency
- Maintain detailed, accurate fertilizer application and soil sampling records that support Pictsweet’s production documentation requirements and regulatory compliance obligations
Field Research & New Product Evaluation
- Supervise and coordinate field research activities evaluating new agricultural products, crop protection materials, fertility programs, and production practices for potential adoption on Pictsweet farms
- Design and manage replicated field trials following sound agronomic research protocols — collecting, recording, and analyzing data to support evidence-based farming decisions
- Engage with university extension specialists, seed company agronomists, crop protection representatives, and certified crop advisors to access the latest agronomic research and technology relevant to Tennessee vegetable production
- Present field research findings and product evaluation results to Farm Management — providing clear, practical recommendations for adoption of new practices that improve crop quality, yield, or production efficiency
Production Records & Documentation
- Maintain thorough and accurate production records covering all crop management activities — including pesticide applications, fertilizer programs, soil sampling data, field research results, and crop inspection findings
- Ensure all farm production records meet Pictsweet’s internal documentation standards and support audit readiness for FDA, USDA, and food safety regulatory inspections
- Oversee the proper handling, storage, and accessibility of all Safety Data Sheets (SDS) across farm operations in compliance with OSHA HazCom requirements
- Support Farm Management by providing timely, organized production data and reporting that informs operational planning, input purchasing, and crop management decisions across all Pictsweet farm locations
Food Safety & Regulatory Compliance
- Monitor and ensure full compliance with all food safety and personnel safety regulations applicable to Pictsweet’s Tennessee vegetable farming operations — including FDA, USDA, OSHA, and TOSHA requirements
- Follow and enforce all Company policies and procedures including Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Employee Handbook requirements, Food Quality Policies, GMP Handbook guidelines, and HACCP food safety protocols
- Comply with all other federal, state, and local regulations and laws affecting Pictsweet’s agricultural operations — including business law, trade secrets, personnel practices, and environmental regulations
- Actively participate in food safety training, safety awareness initiatives, and compliance audits — contributing to a culture of safety that protects both farm personnel and the consumers of Pictsweet’s American-grown vegetables
Farm Operations Support & Team Collaboration
- Assist Farm Management with all aspects of day-to-day farm operations — providing technical expertise, practical support, and professional agronomic guidance across all crops and farm activities
- Follow all applicable safety standards during all farm activities — demonstrating personal commitment to workplace safety and leading by example for the broader farm team
- Work flexible hours as required by crop development, weather conditions, and seasonal demands — including weekends and holidays when needed to meet the needs of the farming operation
- Perform all other duties as assigned by Farm Management — maintaining a collaborative, team-first attitude that supports Pictsweet’s mission of growing great American vegetables
Requirements & Qualifications
Educational Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, Agronomy, Crop Science, Plant Science, Horticulture, or a closely related agricultural field from an accredited university — minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 required
- Strong verbal and written communication skills — ability to communicate agronomic recommendations, research findings, and compliance requirements clearly to farm team members and management
Experience Requirements
- Previous hands-on experience in crop production is preferred — field experience with vegetable crops, row crops, or comparable commercial agriculture in the southeastern USA is a significant advantage
- Familiarity with pesticide management, soil sampling programs, fertilizer agronomy, and integrated pest management in a commercial crop production setting preferred
- Experience working with food safety compliance programs including HACCP, GMP, and FDA/USDA regulatory requirements in an agricultural or food production environment is beneficial
Certifications & Licensing
- Must hold or obtain a Certified Crop Advisor (CCA) license within 2 years of employment — Pictsweet supports candidates working toward CCA certification
