Position Overview

The Grain & Agronomy Operator at CPI in Red Cloud, NE is a full-time, hands-on outdoor operations role responsible for loading and unloading grain commodities, blending and loading dry and liquid fertilizer and agricultural chemicals, and operating railcar loading facilities at designated CPI locations. Working both independently and as part of a team, the Grain & Agronomy Operator plays a critical role in the smooth, safe and efficient movement of grain and agronomy inputs that serve CPI’s farmer-member base across central Nebraska. No prior experience is necessary — CPI provides comprehensive training to set every new team member up for success. Heavy equipment operation is available for certified operators.

Why This Role Matters: At Cooperative Producers Inc, the Grain & Agronomy Operator is on the front line of the agricultural supply chain that directly serves the farming families of Red Cloud and the surrounding Nebraska and Kansas communities. Every grain load you move, every fertilizer blend you prepare and every railcar you load supports a local farmer’s ability to get their inputs on time, market their grain efficiently and sustain the agricultural livelihood that the cooperative has supported for generations. This is meaningful, community-rooted work where you can see — and feel — the local impact of what you do every single day.

 Key Responsibilities

Grain Operations — Loading, Unloading & Commodity Handling

  • Load and unload grain commodities efficiently and safely at CPI’s Red Cloud facility — managing grain receiving, storage and load-out activities in compliance with CPI’s safety policies and operational procedures.
  • Operate grain handling equipment accurately and carefully — ensuring grain is moved, stored and loaded correctly to maintain product quality, minimize losses and support timely delivery to market.
  • Assist with railcar loading operations at designated CPI facilities — ensuring accurate grain weights, correct documentation and safe, efficient railcar fill procedures as required.
  • Maintain a clean, organized and safe grain facility environment — actively supporting CPI’s safety-first culture by identifying and reporting hazards and keeping all work areas free of obstructions.

Agronomy Operations — Fertilizer & Chemical Blending

  • Blend and load dry fertilizer products accurately — following CPI blend specifications, scale procedures and product handling protocols to deliver the correct fertilizer blends to farmer-member customers efficiently.
  • Load liquid fertilizer and agricultural chemical products — managing liquid handling equipment, hoses, tanks and safety equipment in full compliance with CPI safety policies and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Handle agricultural chemicals correctly and safely — applying appropriate PPE, following chemical handling SOPs and ensuring all chemical storage, dispensing and loading activities comply with CPI and regulatory safety standards.
  • Support agronomy department operations as directed — assisting with product inventory, supply ordering and general agronomy facility maintenance activities during peak agronomy season periods.

Team Operations, Safety & Equipment

  • Work effectively both independently and as part of a team — adapting to the operational demands of daily grain and agronomy activities while supporting colleagues across CPI’s Red Cloud facility.
  • Follow all CPI safety policies and procedures rigorously — participating in safety training, reporting near-misses and near-hazards and contributing to a safety-first workplace culture across all operations.
  • Operate heavy equipment as needed when certified — including loaders, skid steers or other agricultural equipment used in grain and agronomy operations at CPI facilities.
  • Demonstrate a positive attitude, excellent attendance and openness to overtime opportunities — particularly during peak harvest and planting seasons when CPI operations require extended support.

Qualifications & Requirements

Experience & Education

  • No prior experience in grain or agronomy operations is required — Cooperative Producers Inc provides comprehensive, hands-on training to ensure every new team member is equipped for success in this role.
  • A positive attitude, reliable attendance and willingness to work independently and as part of a team are the most important qualities CPI looks for in a Grain & Agronomy Operator candidate.
  • A valid driver’s license is beneficial for this role — for operating company vehicles and supporting logistics activities across CPI facilities in the Red Cloud, NE area.
