Position Overview
The Head Greenhouse Grower at Michael’s Greenhouses in Cheshire, CT leads all greenhouse cultivation activities across a large-scale, multi-season commercial ornamental and floriculture operation. Key Responsibilities
Greenhouse Operations Leadership & Climate Control
- Direct all greenhouse growing activities across multi-season transitions — ensuring optimal climate conditions for each crop throughout the production calendar
- Manage space allocation across greenhouse structures — planning crop placement to maximise production efficiency and growing environment utilisation
- Oversee all aspects of large-scale production of high-quality annuals, perennials, and florist-quality holiday crops throughout the growing season
- Monitor and adjust climate control systems — temperature, humidity, ventilation, and irrigation — to maintain ideal growing conditions for premium output
IPM Programme Management & Quality Assurance
- Oversee and continuously refine rigorous Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programmes across all greenhouse production areas and crop types
- Manage and direct chemical and fertiliser applications using advanced cultivation techniques — ensuring crop health, compliance, and premium quality
- Monitor crops closely for pest, disease, and nutritional issues — implementing timely, targeted interventions to protect crop quality and yield
- Drive a consistent culture of horticultural excellence and quality standards across every stage of production at the Cheshire greenhouse
Signature Crop Production — Poinsettias & Easter Lily
- Lead the production of Michael’s Greenhouses’ signature poinsettia crop — managing timing, pinching, lighting, and finishing to the highest florist quality
- Oversee Easter lily production — managing bulb programming, forcing, and finishing to meet Northeast wholesale market demand and quality expectations
- Ensure all holiday crop production schedules are planned well in advance and executed precisely to meet customer delivery timelines
- Apply specialist knowledge of photoperiod, temperature management, and chemical growth regulation across all holiday and seasonal crop programmes
Team Mentorship, Training & Talent Development
- Train, lead, and inspire the greenhouse growing team — building their horticultural knowledge, practical skills, and professional pride in the work
- Mentor team members to maintain industry-leading growing standards and develop their capability to take on greater responsibility over time

Qualifications & Requirements
Educational Requirements
- 2–4 year degree in Horticulture, Plant Science, Floriculture, Agriculture, or a closely related field — required for this Head Grower role
Experience Requirements
- 3–5 years of commercial, high-volume ornamental or floriculture growing experience in a greenhouse or controlled environment agriculture setting
- Demonstrated experience managing large-scale IPM programmes, chemical applications, and fertiliser regimes across multiple crop types
- Experience managing multi-season greenhouse production transitions — annuals, perennials, and florist-quality holiday crop programmes
- Prior leadership or supervisory experience in a commercial greenhouse or agricultural growing environment is strongly preferred
