Position Overview
The Software Engineer role at freiheit.com technologies in Hamburg is not a conventional engineering job posting. freiheit.com is one of Germany’s most respected and longest-standing custom software engineering organisations — a company that has been building mission-critical, large-scale software platforms for the “Who’s Who” of German and European industry for more than 25 years, has never missed a delivery, and counts some of the continent’s most strategically important digital platforms among its outputs. The engineers who work here are not order-takers executing tickets. They are the end-to-end technical owners of products that millions of people use every day.
You will join a team of maximum five engineers — a deliberate structural choice that ensures every team member has real visibility, real responsibility, and real learning. You will be involved in every phase of the software lifecycle: design, development, testing, deployment, maintenance, operations, and iterative improvement based on real user feedback and usage data. You will receive deep technical training from experienced freiheit.com engineers in your first weeks. And you will work directly with clients — intelligent people, on genuinely hard problems, building things that no one has built before. If you want to become the best version of yourself as a software engineer, freiheit.com Hamburg is one of the most demanding and most rewarding places in Germany to do it.
Why freiheit.com Technologies in Hamburg Is One of Germany’s Most Prestigious Software Engineering Organisations in 2026: In a technology market saturated with companies that talk about engineering excellence, freiheit.com has a 25-year track record of actually delivering it — zero failed deliveries in over two decades, a 300-person team where 85% are engineers with computer science, mathematics, or physics backgrounds, large-scale platforms used by millions of daily active users, and a learning culture so strong that people consistently cite it as the primary reason they stay. For a software engineer who wants to be genuinely challenged, genuinely developed, and surrounded by genuinely exceptional peers — freiheit.com Hamburg is not just a good engineering job. It is one of the best engineering career decisions available in Germany right now.
What the Role Involves
Engineering Team & Onboarding
- Start in one of freiheit.com’s engineering teams of maximum five people — a deliberately small team structure that ensures every engineer has genuine ownership, real technical contribution across the full codebase, meaningful peer relationships, and the kind of learning-through-doing intensity that larger teams inevitably dilute; there are no passengers in a five-person engineering team at freiheit.com
- Receive intensive introductory training in the first weeks in the technologies you will use on your project — training conducted by experienced freiheit.com software engineers from within the company, not generic onboarding materials; freiheit.com invests seriously in getting new engineers up to speed quickly and deeply on the specific technical stack, architectural conventions, and engineering standards of their assigned project
- Work in a data-driven engineering environment where teams constantly measure and optimise their own productivity — using usage data, performance metrics, and structured retrospectives to identify and remove friction from the engineering workflow, and where every engineer is expected to actively contribute to the continuous improvement of how the team builds software, not just what it builds
Full Software Lifecycle Ownership — Design to Operations
- Take part in every stage of the software engineering lifecycle — design, development, testing, deployment, maintenance, and operations — owning the complete technical lifecycle of the services your team builds from initial architectural design through live production operations and iterative improvement based on real user feedback and usage data
- Apply end-to-end engineering responsibility to large-scale, business-critical software platforms used by millions of users daily — building systems where scale, reliability, performance, and maintainability matter enormously, and where engineering decisions have direct consequences for the client’s business and the experience of the millions of people who depend on the platform every day
- Contribute to design and architecture decisions alongside experienced freiheit.com engineers — actively participating in the technical problem-solving, system design, and architectural trade-off analysis that determines how the team’s software is built, not simply implementing decisions made by others and submitted as tickets to be closed
- Work in Go, C/C++, Python, or Java as primary backend engineering languages — with the depth to write clean, efficient, well-tested production code in at least one of these languages, and the learning ability to extend your proficiency into additional languages, frameworks, and domains as project requirements evolve across the freiheit.com project portfolio
Client Collaboration & Iterative Product Improvement
- Work closely with freiheit.com’s clients to iteratively improve their product offering — conceiving, refining, and delivering new ideas that improve the client’s digital platform in response to real user feedback, usage data, and evolving business requirements; this is not a role where engineering is isolated from product and client — it is one where engineers are active participants in the product thinking that drives each platform’s evolution
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of engineering processes and platform quality — actively participating in the freiheit.com culture of engineering excellence that has produced 25 years of zero failed deliveries, by taking personal responsibility for the quality of your code, your test coverage, your documentation, and your contribution to the team’s shared technical standards
Required Qualifications
Essential
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, or a closely related analytical field — freiheit.com’s engineering team is 85% engineers from CS, mathematics, or physics backgrounds; the analytical rigour and first-principles problem-solving capability that these disciplines develop is a genuine and consistently applied selection criterion
- Experience in Go, C/C++, Python, or Java — with production-level coding capability in at least one of these languages, and the engineering maturity to write readable, maintainable, well-tested code that production systems and teammates alike can depend on
- Ability to learn fast — freiheit.com’s project portfolio spans industries, tech stacks, and problem domains; the ability to absorb new technical contexts rapidly, apply existing engineering fundamentals to unfamiliar problems, and get productive in new codebases quickly is as valued as any specific language or framework experience
Bonus Skills
- Master’s or PhD in Computer Science, Mathematics, or Physics — advanced academic background in analytical disciplines
- Strong algorithms and data structures depth — understanding of time and space complexity with competitive programming experience
- Kotlin, TypeScript, or JavaScript; front-end experience with ReactJS, Angular, Vue, or Flutter/Dart
- Functional programming with Common Lisp, Clojure, or Haskell — and/or experience with distributed systems in cloud environments
- Machine Learning and Data Science experience — freiheit.com has significant ML/AI capability across its engineering team
Why freiheit.com Technologies Hamburg Is One of the Best Software Engineering Careers in Germany in 2026
