Position Overview
As Mechanical Engineer – Diagnostics, you develop precision mechanical systems and devices for advanced laser and fusion experiments, from concept to installation and commissioning. You turn scientific and diagnostic requirements into designs that can be made and are reliable, and you own drawings, supplier follow-up, assembly, alignment, testing and troubleshooting. You work closely with scientists, electrical engineers and controls teams.
Why This Role Matters: Fusion is one of the hardest technical problems there is, and this role puts your mechanical skills right inside the experiments. You work in a fast-growing startup with world-leading scientists, and you own the work from design to handover.
Key Responsibilities
Design & Documentation
- Design and develop precision mechanical parts, assemblies, fixtures and positioning systems for optical and experimental diagnostics
- Create and maintain 3D CAD models, manufacturing and assembly drawings, bills of materials and documentation, including GD&T and tolerance analyses
Materials & Suppliers
- Choose materials, components, processes and suppliers, with attention to precision, cleanliness, vacuum compatibility, thermal stability and vibration
- Coordinate manufacturing and procurement, review supplier drawings and quotes, solve fabrication issues and inspect delivered parts
Assembly & Commissioning
- Plan and carry out mechanical assembly, alignment, integration and functional testing in laboratories and experimental facilities
- Support on-site installation, commissioning, troubleshooting and design improvements with scientists, electrical engineers and controls teams
- Keep configuration control, design revisions, verification records and clear handover documents
Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in mechanical engineering, mechatronics, precision engineering or a related field
Experience & Skills
- Practical experience designing and delivering precision mechanical devices, instruments or optomechanical assemblies
- 3D CAD and production drawings, preferably Autodesk Inventor or SolidWorks, including GD&T, tolerance stack-ups and design for manufacturing and assembly
- Understanding of machining, fabrication, materials, fasteners, bearings, alignment methods and metrology
- Hands-on support of manufacturing, assembly, testing, installation or commissioning
- Able to coordinate with suppliers and multidisciplinary teams
What Sets You Apart
- Experience with scientific diagnostics, optical instruments, laser facilities, beamlines or experimental physics equipment
- Design for high vacuum, cleanrooms, low vibration, thermal stability or micron-level alignment
- Knowledge of motion stages, actuators, kinematic mounts, FEA and acceptance testing
