Position Overview
This Principal Welding Engineer role is responsible for interpreting internal and external business issues and recommending best practices to solve complex welding-related problems. Working independently with minimal guidance, you will guide the Welding Engineering discipline and metallurgical consultative services for onshore and offshore projects, oversee welding qualification plans and procedures, manage the welding school facility, and liaise with a wide range of internal and external technical stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities
Welding Engineering Discipline Leadership
- Guide the Welding Engineering discipline and metallurgical consultative welding services for onshore and offshore projects
- Lead functional teams or projects as a recognized specialist in welding
Welding Qualification & Procedure Management
- Develop the Project Welding Qualification Execution Plan defining weld procedures, schedules, and consumable requirements
- Establish priorities relevant to project schedules and review progress
- Review and approve Project Weld Procedures through communication with customers and Certifying Authorities
- Select appropriate electrodes based on physical, chemical, corrosion, weldability, and economic factors
Project & Materials Management
- Review project schedules, material control reports, and welding consumable estimates
- Complete welding consumable project-specific requirements estimation and monitoring
- Complete readiness reviews for important offshore campaigns
- Monitor projects during the execution stage
Training, Development & Technology
- Manage the welding school facility for workforce training and development
- Assist in the support and development of automatic welding systems
- Work with Fabrication Management, Yard Welding, Marine Group, and AWS on R&D and new technology
- Maintain contact with technical groups such as TWI, DNV, and EWI for updates on the latest technology
Quality, Problem Resolution & Team Management
- Assist in resolving metallurgical, welding, and quality-related problems by investigating failure causes
- Initiate “Fit for Purpose” evaluations of nonconforming work
- Evaluate the performance of Welding Engineers, including training needs and compensation decisions
- Visit vendor facilities for technical evaluation and support bid input through the Welding Engineering Group
Qualifications & Requirements
Educational Requirements
- MS/M Tech/ME in Welding
- BS/BE/B Tech in Welding, Metallurgy, or Mechanical Engineering
Experience Requirements
- 8+ years directly related to welding, metallurgy, materials, and subsea pipelines
Certifications
- Chartered Engineer (C Eng.) or Senior Member of Welding Institute or similar professional body preferred
- Welding Inspection Qualification preferred
