Key Responsibilities
Product Design Development — Customer Requirements & Market Research
- Develop product design ideas based on a thorough understanding of customer interests, project budgets, and market research findings — translating client technical requirements, operational parameters, and commercial constraints into initial engineering design concepts that balance technical performance, manufacturability, regulatory compliance, and cost-effectiveness
- Meet with the development team to discuss product ideas, design concepts, and engineering approaches — contributing thoughtfully to collaborative engineering discussions, presenting design concepts clearly and constructively, and incorporating team feedback and senior engineer guidance into evolving design solutions throughout the product development process
- Create rough product designs using sketches and preliminary computer-aided design (CAD) software models — rapidly translating conceptual design thinking into visual representations that can be evaluated, discussed, and refined by the development team and shared with clients for early-stage design review and feedback
- Ensure design ideas consistently account for all relevant technical, safety, and regulatory requirements applicable to the product type — including relevant international engineering codes and standards, client specifications, and McDermott’s internal engineering design procedures and quality requirements
Market & Industry Trend Analysis
- Analyse the market and industry product trends relevant to McDermott’s production engineering and fabrication activities — staying current with developments in offshore energy infrastructure design, subsea equipment engineering, offshore wind component fabrication, energy transition technology, and the competitive landscape of energy engineering product development
- Apply market and industry insight to inform product design decisions — ensuring that engineering designs are not only technically correct but also commercially competitive, aligned with evolving customer requirements, and reflective of the direction in which the energy infrastructure industry is developing both in the Middle East region and globally
- Share market and technical trend analysis with the development team — contributing to broader engineering team awareness of industry developments, emerging materials and manufacturing technologies, regulatory changes, and client requirement evolution that may influence current or future production engineering design approaches
- Support the continuous improvement of McDermott’s production engineering capabilities — applying market and technical awareness to identify opportunities for design methodology improvement, new material application, or manufacturing process innovation that could enhance product quality, performance, or cost-competitiveness
Computer Software Modelling — Full Product Design & Specifications
- Create full product designs and detailed specifications using computer software modelling techniques — developing complete 3D parametric models of production components and assemblies using industry-standard CAD software, with the geometric detail, feature intelligence, and configuration management discipline required to support detailed design review, interference checking, manufacturing drawing derivation, and assembly planning
- Conduct theoretical testing on design models — applying finite element analysis (FEA), structural simulation, fluid dynamics modelling, or other applicable engineering analysis tools to evaluate design performance under expected operating loads, pressures, temperatures, and environmental conditions before committing to physical prototype or manufacturing
- Develop and maintain full engineering design documentation — including product specifications, design calculations, material lists, assembly drawings, and all other technical documentation required to define the product completely and accurately for procurement, manufacturing, quality assurance, and client review
- Revise and iterate designs based on theoretical testing results, team review feedback, and client input — applying engineering judgement and analytical rigour to evaluate design alternatives, resolve identified design issues, and arrive at optimised final designs that meet all technical, safety, and commercial requirements
Material Selection & Manufacturing Process Design
- Select appropriate product materials for each application — evaluating material options against required mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, weldability, machinability, availability, cost, and the specific environmental and operational demands of the offshore, subsea, or onshore energy application for which the product is being designed
- Design the product manufacturing process — defining the fabrication sequence, machining operations, welding procedures, surface treatment requirements, assembly methods, and inspection and testing requirements that together constitute a complete, practical, and quality-assured manufacturing process for the designed product
- Apply knowledge of fabrication and manufacturing practices relevant to energy infrastructure engineering — including structural steel fabrication, pipe spooling, mechanical assembly, welding and non-destructive examination, coating and surface treatment, and the specific fabrication disciplines relevant to McDermott’s offshore and onshore construction activities
- Collaborate with supply chain and procurement teams to verify material availability, lead times, and supplier qualification status — ensuring that material selections are practically achievable within project procurement timelines and budgets, and flagging any material availability risks to the project team early enough to allow alternative specification or procurement strategy adjustment
Assembly Oversight & Quality Conformance
- Oversee assembly activities to ensure that manufactured products conform to market specifications, engineering design requirements, and applicable safety regulations — providing engineering support and technical guidance during fabrication and assembly, resolving engineering queries from fabrication teams promptly, and verifying that assembled products meet the quality standards defined in the design specifications
- Verify conformance of fabricated and assembled products against design drawings, specifications, and applicable codes and standards — conducting in-process and final inspection activities, reviewing quality control test results and inspection records, and confirming that all required quality activities have been completed and documented before products are released for delivery or installation
- Identify and resolve manufacturing and assembly problems — applying engineering problem-solving skills to investigate deviations from design intent, evaluate alternative approaches, develop practical engineering solutions, and implement improvements that prevent recurrence of fabrication quality issues
- Engage effectively with production, fabrication, quality, and project management teams — building the collaborative working relationships and mutual technical respect that enable smooth, well-coordinated product development and manufacturing activities within McDermott’s multi-disciplinary project delivery environment
Qualifications & Requirements
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Structural Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline — a relevant engineering degree is the preferred educational qualification for this Associate Production Engineer role at McDermott International
