Position Overview
The Senior Road Engineer at AECOM Abu Dhabi is a technically rigorous, senior infrastructure supervision and coordination role — operating within AECOM’s Transportation Business Line across the Middle East and Africa Strategic Business Unit. Key Responsibilities
Construction Supervision & Quality Monitoring
- Supervise and monitor infrastructure works to ensure compliance with approved drawings, specifications, method statements, ITPs, and project requirements — maintaining an active, technically authoritative supervision presence across all infrastructure work fronts, ensuring that all construction activities are executed in full compliance with AECOM’s quality standards, the project specification, and Abu Dhabi authority requirements at every stage
- Supervise the installation and execution of mechanical and civil works for pump stations, lifting stations, drainage pumping systems, and associated infrastructure — coordinating all aspects of installation from setting-out and excavation through equipment installation, pipework, valve assembly, electrical connections, and final commissioning across Abu Dhabi’s active infrastructure construction programme
- Monitor site progress, quality, workmanship, and compliance with approved project requirements — maintaining an accurate current picture of construction progress across all work fronts, identifying quality deviations or workmanship deficiencies before they become embedded defects, and reporting progress and quality status to the Resident Engineer and Project Management team with the clarity and regularity that AECOM’s project management standards require
- Conduct site inspections and review inspection requests to ensure all infrastructure works are completed in accordance with approved documents — holding the formal inspection gates that certify work phases as compliant before subsequent construction activities proceed, and maintaining the complete inspection record that demonstrates project-wide quality compliance for AECOM’s client and Abu Dhabi authorities
Technical Review & Contractor Submissions
- Review and assess contractor technical submissions including shop drawings, material submittals, method statements, RFIs, technical proposals, and equipment submittals — applying senior engineering judgement to evaluate the technical adequacy, specification compliance, and practical constructability of all contractor submissions, providing structured, clear, and technically sound review comments that enable efficient resolution and resubmission where required
- Review the Contractor’s proposed equipment, materials, and mechanical systems for compliance with project specifications and approved requirements — assessing pump specifications, valve selections, pipework materials, lifting station equipment, and associated mechanical systems against the project specification and applicable standards, identifying non-compliances before procurement commitments are made
- Monitor the Contractor’s compliance with approved construction methods, quality requirements, and project specifications — maintaining awareness of the Contractor’s actual construction methodology at all times, identifying deviations from approved method statements, and coordinating appropriate corrective actions before non-compliant work is incorporated into permanent infrastructure
- Identify technical issues, construction risks, and potential delays and coordinate appropriate corrective actions — applying senior engineering experience and project awareness to anticipate emerging technical risks before they materialise as significant quality, safety, or programme impacts, and escalating identified risks through the appropriate channels with recommended mitigation actions
Testing, Commissioning & Equipment Monitoring
- Monitor the installation, testing, commissioning, and completion of pumps, lifting station equipment, mechanical systems, pipework, valves, and associated equipment — overseeing the complete installation-to-commissioning lifecycle for all infrastructure mechanical equipment on the Abu Dhabi project, ensuring that every piece of installed equipment is correctly installed, aligned, connected, tested, and commissioned before handover
- Review testing and commissioning procedures and witness relevant tests for pumps, lifting stations, and associated mechanical systems — ensuring that all equipment tests are conducted in accordance with the approved testing and commissioning programme, that test results meet specification requirements, and that all witnessed test results are formally recorded and certified in the project quality management records
- Review and monitor mechanical equipment installation, alignment, connections, testing, and commissioning — applying specific knowledge of pump and mechanical equipment installation requirements to verify correct setting, alignment, coupling, and connection of all rotating and static mechanical equipment, and to identify installation deficiencies that would compromise equipment performance or operational life
Multidisciplinary Coordination & Stakeholder Management
- Coordinate works with civil, electrical, wet utilities, structural, and other disciplines to ensure proper interfaces and timely execution — managing the technical coordination between road, civil, mechanical, and electrical construction activities to prevent interface conflicts, construction sequence clashes, and coordination failures that could delay programme or compromise construction quality on the Abu Dhabi infrastructure project
- Coordinate with the Contractor, Authorities, stakeholders, and other project disciplines to resolve technical and construction-related issues — maintaining the external coordination relationships with Abu Dhabi authorities, utility authorities, the Contractor, and specialist subcontractors that ensure technical approvals, utility clearances, and authority inspections proceed in a timely and well-managed manner throughout the project
- Participate in technical, progress, and coordination meetings with the Contractor and project stakeholders — contributing senior engineering knowledge to project meetings, representing AECOM’s technical position on construction and quality matters, and following up on all actions, instructions, and commitments arising from meetings to ensure they are closed out effectively
- Support the Resident Engineer and Project Management team in the successful delivery of the works — providing the senior technical engineering support that the Resident Engineer and Project Manager rely on to maintain construction quality, manage the Contractor, meet programme milestones, and deliver the project in accordance with AECOM’s standards and the client’s expectations

Essential Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related engineering discipline — from a recognised institution; a relevant engineering degree is the mandatory academic qualification for this Senior Road Engineer role at AECOM Abu Dhabi
- Minimum 10 years of relevant experience in mechanical or civil works for infrastructure and construction projects — with direct, hands-on experience in infrastructure construction supervision, contractor management, quality monitoring, and technical documentation review on projects of comparable scale and complexity in the UAE or GCC

- Experience in installation, testing, commissioning, and troubleshooting of mechanical systems — with the practical engineering knowledge to supervise equipment installation, verify alignment and connections, review commissioning procedures, witness performance tests, and diagnose and resolve installation or commissioning deficiencies
- Experience reviewing technical submissions, shop drawings, method statements, ITPs, RFIs, and equipment submittals — with the technical literacy and review discipline to assess contractor submissions comprehensively, identify non-compliances, and provide clear, constructive, and technically sound review comments
