Position Overview
As a Software Development Engineer on Clearwater Analytics’ TRMS team in New York, you will contribute to the design, implementation, and maintenance of software applications and services that process market, position, and reference data — and enable critical financial risk calculations including sensitivities, Greeks, VaR, PFE, and XVA for institutional clients. This is a role that emphasises continuous learning, disciplined engineering practices, and collaboration across product, quant, and engineering functions. As you grow in the role, you will take on increasing design responsibilities, improve system components, and actively influence best practices within the TRMS engineering team. Successful engineers at Clearwater demonstrate strong problem-solving ability, clear communication, solid coding habits, and a collaborative team mindset.
Key Responsibilities
Software Development & System Engineering
- Develop, enhance, and maintain software applications and services used in risk workflows and data processing pipelines — contributing to the systems that power Clearwater Analytics’ financial risk analytics platform.
- Build and maintain integrations and pipelines for trade, position, and market data — ensuring reliable, scalable, and performant data flows across the TRMS ecosystem and downstream risk calculation engines.
- Participate in design discussions and propose improvements that support scalability, performance, and maintainability of TRMS system components — contributing architectural thinking alongside your implementation work.
- Support CI/CD processes, build pipelines, and release activities — contributing to the engineering team’s continuous delivery practices and ensuring code quality throughout the development lifecycle.
Collaboration & Agile Delivery
- Collaborate with product managers, quants, and engineering peers to clarify requirements, translate business needs into functioning code, and ensure that engineering deliverables align with the real-world needs of financial risk users.
- Assist in story creation, effort estimation, and delivery planning within an Agile environment — contributing to sprint planning, retrospectives, and continuous improvement of team processes and delivery velocity.
- Document implementation details, design decisions, and APIs to support knowledge sharing, onboarding of new engineers, and long-term maintainability of TRMS system components.
Code Quality, Testing & Troubleshooting
- Write unit and integration tests and contribute to overall code quality and reliability — supporting a culture of test-driven development and high engineering standards across the TRMS codebase.
- Perform troubleshooting and root-cause analysis to resolve defects, diagnose system issues, and improve the stability and resilience of risk management software components under production conditions.
Requirements & Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field — or equivalent practical experience demonstrating the technical foundations required for this software engineering role.
Experience
- 2+ years of professional software development experience — demonstrated ability to deliver production-quality code, contribute to engineering teams, and solve real-world software challenges in a professional setting.
- Financial services experience is a bonus, not a requirement — Clearwater Analytics provides comprehensive domain training in trading, risk management, and financial analytics for engineers who join from non-finance backgrounds.
- Experience working on data-intensive, distributed, or mission-critical systems is a plus but not expected at entry level — the engineering fundamentals matter most.
Required Technical Skills
- Strong understanding of data structures, algorithms, and object-oriented programming — the core computer science foundations that underpin reliable, performant financial software systems.
- Proficiency in Python or another modern object-oriented language (Java, C#, C++) — Python is preferred for data-intensive risk analytics workflows but equivalent OOP experience is accepted.
- Familiarity with APIs, microservices, or backend service development — experience building or consuming APIs in a service-oriented architecture context.
- Comfort with Git and code review processes — able to participate productively in collaborative version-controlled development environments.
Who Should Apply?
- Python Developers with 2+ Years Experience: Backend or data engineering professionals comfortable with Python, data structures, and OOP looking to enter the FinTech / financial risk analytics sector in New York.
- Backend / Microservices Engineers: With API, service development, or distributed systems experience who want to apply their engineering skills in a financially impactful, quantitatively rich environment.
- Engineers Interested in Finance (No Background Required): Clearwater provides full domain training — curious engineers from any industry who want to learn about VaR, XVA, trading systems, and risk analytics are encouraged to apply.
- CI/CD and Agile-Experienced Developers: Comfortable with Git, automated testing, build pipelines, and Agile delivery processes — ready to contribute to a disciplined engineering team in New York’s FinTech hub.
- Computer Science / Mathematics Graduates: BS or MS holders with 2+ years of professional software development experience who want to grow their career in risk analytics and financial software engineering.
