Position Overview
The Underground Structures Lead — Construction at AECOM Abu Dhabi is one of the most technically demanding and professionally consequential senior engineering roles on the UAE’s high-speed rail programme — a national infrastructure project of extraordinary scale, technical complexity, and long-term significance. In this role, you will lead the design and development of underground structures including tunnels, underground stations, and intervention shafts; develop solutions for TBM drives, launch and retrieval locations, and ventilation shafts; oversee construction activities across underground works; manage contractor submissions and verify structural designs; implement fire and life safety strategies; and coordinate with the full spectrum of stakeholders — government agencies, military entities, private landowners, and specialist consultants — to deliver underground infrastructure that is safe, compliant, and built to last for generations.
This position requires a genuine underground structures expert — not a generalist structural engineer with some tunnelling exposure, but a specialist who has led significant TBM or cut-and-cover tunnel programmes, designed or supervised complex underground station structures, and navigated the specific engineering challenges of underground rail construction in dense urban environments. UAE-specific expertise — understanding how extreme heat, sand infiltration, high groundwater tables in coastal areas, and the UAE’s regulatory framework affect underground construction — is directly relevant and strongly advantageous in this Abu Dhabi high-speed rail context.
Why This Underground Structures Lead Role at AECOM Abu Dhabi Is a Once-in-a-Career Engineering Opportunity: The UAE’s high-speed rail programme is one of the most ambitious national infrastructure projects underway anywhere in the world right now — connecting cities, transforming mobility, and reshaping how a nation moves. The underground structures component of that programme — tunnels bored through challenging UAE geology, underground stations designed for tens of thousands of daily passengers, intervention shafts and ventilation systems engineered for extreme desert heat — requires engineering expertise of the highest international standard. The Underground Structures Lead at AECOM is the technical expert who makes that underground infrastructure possible. That is not a job description. That is a generational engineering legacy.
Key Responsibilities
Design & Engineering — Underground Structures
- Lead the design and development of underground structures including tunnels, underground stations, and intervention shafts — providing expert technical leadership across all underground structure design activities on the UAE high-speed rail programme, from initial concept and feasibility through detailed design, design verification, construction issue, and post-construction review
- Develop engineering solutions for TBM drives, launch and retrieval locations, and ventilation shafts — applying specialist TBM tunnel engineering knowledge to optimise launch and retrieval shaft locations and configurations, define TBM drive parameters and segment ring design, and engineer the ventilation shaft systems that maintain safe environmental conditions in UAE underground rail tunnels under extreme ambient temperature conditions
- Ensure compliance with international standards including AASHTO LRFD and Eurocodes — applying the applicable design codes to all underground structural design, ensuring that structural adequacy, geotechnical design, and construction methodology comply with the international standards that the UAE high-speed rail client and authorities require, and documenting code compliance clearly throughout all design deliverables
- Apply proficiency in STAAD Pro, SAP2000, and AutoCAD Civil 3D — using structural analysis and design software to verify the structural adequacy of tunnel lining systems, underground station structures, intervention shaft walls, and associated underground structural elements under all design load cases including construction stage loads, operational loads, seismic loads, and extreme temperature effects
- Apply knowledge of geotechnical engineering principles including soil-structure interaction and ground improvement techniques — integrating geotechnical data and analysis into underground structural design, developing ground improvement schemes where required, and ensuring that underground structure design adequately accounts for the specific geological and groundwater conditions encountered along the UAE high-speed rail alignment
Construction Supervision & Contractor Management
- Oversee construction activities ensuring adherence to design specifications and timelines — maintaining technical oversight across all underground construction works on the UAE high-speed rail programme, ensuring that TBM tunnelling, cut-and-cover excavation, underground station construction, and shaft works are executed in full compliance with approved design documents, construction method statements, and quality management requirements
- Manage contractor submissions and verify structural designs for tunnels, underground stations, culverts, and other underground elements — reviewing and technically approving all contractor-produced design submissions, shop drawings, temporary works designs, and method statements for underground construction activities, providing structured, technically authoritative review comments that protect design integrity and construction safety
- Guide the selection of construction methodologies including cut-and-cover and mined tunnelling — applying lessons learned from global high-speed rail projects to advise on the most appropriate construction methodology for each underground structure, balancing technical risk, programme impact, cost, and the specific constraints of constructing underground rail infrastructure in Abu Dhabi’s urban and peri-urban environment
- Leverage lessons learned from global high-speed rail projects — applying international best practice from comparable HSR underground programmes to optimise design decisions, construction methodology choices, contractor management approaches, and risk mitigation strategies across the UAE high-speed rail underground works programme
Safety, Risk Management & Fire Life Safety
- Implement fire and life safety strategies for underground rail infrastructure — developing and overseeing the fire and life safety engineering approach for all underground stations, tunnels, and shafts on the UAE high-speed rail network, ensuring that emergency egress provisions, fire suppression systems, smoke control and ventilation strategies, and emergency access configurations meet international rail fire and life safety standards and UAE authority requirements
- Address challenges related to emergency egress, ventilation, and space constraints in urban areas — engineering the emergency egress and ventilation systems that protect passengers and emergency responders in the event of a tunnel or station incident, within the spatial constraints of dense Abu Dhabi urban environments where surface land availability, existing utilities, and building interfaces create complex underground engineering constraints
- Apply expertise in UAE-specific challenges including extreme heat, sand infiltration, and urban density constraints — designing underground structures that perform reliably throughout their operational life in Abu Dhabi’s extreme climate environment, where tunnel portal and shaft ventilation systems must handle ambient temperatures well above international norms and where sand infiltration into tunnel bores and underground station structures requires specific design and material specification attention
Stakeholder Collaboration & Technical Leadership
- Coordinate with government agencies, military, and private stakeholders to address land availability and alignment challenges — managing the complex multi-party stakeholder coordination that underground rail alignment definition and underground structure siting requires in Abu Dhabi, where land ownership, military reservations, existing infrastructure, and urban development constraints create significant alignment and structure location challenges
- Develop solutions to minimise the impact of construction on local communities and ecological habitats — applying construction management, noise and vibration control, and environmental protection engineering to protect Abu Dhabi communities and sensitive ecological areas from the construction impacts of TBM tunnelling, cut-and-cover excavation, and underground station construction activities
- Provide guidance on high-speed rail systems integration including electrification, signalling, and rolling stock — contributing underground structures expertise to the systems integration activities that ensure tunnel geometry, clearance envelopes, fixing provisions, cable management routes, and station platform configurations are correctly coordinated with the electrification, signalling, and rolling stock systems of the UAE high-speed rail programme
Required Qualifications & Expertise
Technical Expertise
- Extensive experience in tunnelling methods including TBM, cut-and-cover, and mined tunnelling (NATM) — with demonstrable lead-role involvement in TBM tunnel drives, underground station construction, and intervention shaft design and construction on large-scale urban rail or high-speed rail infrastructure programmes
- High-speed rail knowledge including involvement in previous HSR projects covering station design, track alignment, and underground facilities — with familiarity with electrification systems, signalling, and rolling stock integration as they relate to underground structure geometry and interface requirements
- Experience managing large-scale infrastructure projects including budget control, resource allocation, and risk mitigation, coordinating multidisciplinary teams across architects, engineers, and contractors in a complex programme delivery environment
