Position Overview

The Horticulture Consultant provides technical assistance on soils, water quality, and plant health diagnostics to growers, horticultural suppliers, landscape architects, contractors, superintendents, and homeowners. You will review soil, water, tissue, and compost analysis data and prepare written reports tailored to each client; check the quality of analytical data and how it is presented; evaluate and correct the chemistry and physical properties of soils; help customers choose the right tests; visit nurseries and greenhouses to consult and collect samples; write fertilizer recommendations for greenhouse and nursery production; manage salinity and irrigation water quality; evaluate composts, amendments, and soilless media; diagnose plant health problems; give talks to trade groups and junior college classes; and research new test methods and run greenhouse trials.

Why This Role Matters: A yellowing crop or a failing landscape rarely comes with a label saying why. As Horticulture Consultant, you read the story in the soil, water, and tissue data, connect it to what the grower is seeing in the field, and give a clear plan to fix it. Good advice can save a crop, cut wasted fertilizer, protect water resources, and help nurseries and greenhouses stay profitable — one client at a time.
