Agricultural Data Analyst Position Overview
The Agricultural Data Analyst role supports financial planning and analysis for the operations side of an organic dairy business, working under the guidance of a senior manager. Dairy finance is unusual. Budgets depend on what is growing in the fields, how many cows are producing, how much milk is being collected, and what feed costs, so the analyst has to understand the operation as well as the spreadsheet. Budgeting is a central part of the work. You’ll gather information from across the business, update the models the team already uses for crops, cattle, milk, and finances, and help keep periodic budgets and forecasts current. Analysis follows. You’ll prepare reports and analyses that help managers make operational decisions, and you’ll keep the metrics, dashboards, and financial reports up to date so that the numbers people rely on are current and accurate. Capital spending needs careful watching. You’ll track actual spend against budget, and when something is out of line you’ll identify the variance and prepare it for review. Month-end work includes assisting with feed reconciliation, which means matching what was bought and used to what was recorded. Behind the scenes, you’ll help maintain the company’s data warehouse and support efforts to simplify reporting and analysis, so that the team spends less time gathering numbers and more time understanding them. Projects and tasks come from the team, and you’ll complete them with guidance while building your own judgement over time.
As Agricultural Data Analyst, you’ll develop a working understanding of dairy operations, financial processes, and the operational data behind them, while building the analytical habits that finance teams rely on. The ideal candidate has a bachelor’s degree in business, finance, accounting, economics, or a related field, or equivalent relevant experience, and up to two years of related experience, which can include internships, coursework, or entry-level work. Strong quantitative and analytical skills are essential, along with confident use of Microsoft Excel and the ability to work within existing models while connecting the details to broader goals. Clear written and verbal communication, attention to detail, and the ability to organize tasks and meet deadlines with support are important. A willingness to ask questions, accept feedback, and suggest practical improvements will help you grow. Dairy or agriculture experience is a plus, and bilingual English and Spanish is a plus. The role involves sitting at a computer for long periods, occasional time on dairy sites in all weather, lifting up to 25 pounds, and occasional scheduled travel, including overnight travel to remote facilities. For early-career analysts in northern Colorado who want to build a finance career in agriculture, this role offers a useful combination of numbers and real operations.
Why This Role Matters: As Agricultural Data Analyst at Aurora Organic Dairy, you help the business plan its budgets and forecasts, turn operational data into reports that guide decisions, track capital spending and feed costs, keep the company’s data warehouse working for the whole team, and build a career in agricultural finance and analytics in Colorado.
