Position Overview
The Data Engineer at Heidelberg Materials Trading Dubai sits at the centre of a transformative data modernisation programme — replacing legacy QlikSense reporting workflows with a scalable, Microsoft Fabric–oriented cloud data platform. You will design, build, and own data pipelines end-to-end using Azure SQL, Azure Data Factory, and Microsoft Fabric, integrate front-office Salesforce and back-office JD Edwards ERP data into a unified analytics layer, build optimised Power BI models and dashboards, automate Excel-based manual workflows into Python or SQL pipelines, and deliver Power BI training and documentation — all while working closely with IT and business stakeholders across Heidelberg’s international drybulk trading operations.
Why This Role Matters: As Data Engineer at Heidelberg Materials Trading Dubai, you are the technical architect of the company’s data intelligence future — replacing fragmented legacy reporting with a robust, scalable Microsoft cloud analytics platform that gives Heidelberg’s trading team the real-time, accurate business insights they need to compete and win in global drybulk markets. Every pipeline you build, every Power BI model you optimise, and every Excel workflow you automate directly improves the quality of decisions being made across millions of dollars of international commodity trades.
Key Responsibilities
QlikSense to Power BI Migration Leadership
- Lead the full migration of business reporting from QlikSense to Power BI — ensuring precise, validated replication of all existing logic, KPIs, calculated metrics, and reporting workflows in the new Power BI environment
- Conduct thorough analysis of existing QlikSense models and reports to fully understand business logic before reengineering into optimised Power BI solutions
- Manage migration phases, user acceptance testing (UAT) cycles, and iterative go-live enhancements — ensuring a smooth, low-disruption transition for all business stakeholders
Azure SQL Data Pipeline Design & Development
- Design, build, and maintain scalable Azure SQL–based data pipelines to support analytics, real-time reporting, and operational decision-making across Heidelberg’s drybulk trading operations
- Develop ETL/ELT pipelines using Azure Data Factory, Azure Synapse Analytics, or Microsoft Fabric — selecting the most appropriate tool for each use case and documenting decisions clearly
- Implement robust data validation, quality checks, monitoring frameworks, and performance optimisation techniques across the full data platform and reporting layers
Power BI Model Development & Semantic Layer Architecture
- Build and optimise Power BI data models, reusable datasets, and semantic layers following industry best-practice data modelling principles — including DAX measures, row-level security, and performance tuning
- Develop business-critical Power BI dashboards that deliver accurate, reliable, and visually compelling insights for Heidelberg’s trading, finance, and operations teams
- Deliver structured Power BI training for business users — creating clear documentation, best practice guides, and dashboard governance materials to support broad adoption
JD Edwards ERP & Salesforce CRM Integration
- Integrate data from JD Edwards (ERP) and Salesforce (CRM) into the unified Azure SQL analytics layer — ensuring accuracy, consistency, completeness, and reliability across the full reporting lifecycle
- Apply deep understanding of ERP and CRM data architectures — leveraging familiarity with JD Edwards, SAP, or Salesforce schemas to design efficient, maintainable integration patterns
- Ensure all integrated data flows are fully tested, monitored, and documented — with clear alerting in place for pipeline failures or data quality anomalies
Excel Workflow Automation & Data Governance
- Reverse engineer complex manual Excel-based workflows — translating them into automated, scalable SQL or Python–based pipelines that dramatically improve data reliability, efficiency, and auditability
- Contribute actively to data governance, security standards, role-based access design, and consistent documentation practices across the cloud data platform
- Work collaboratively with cross-functional business and IT stakeholders to understand requirements and translate them into pragmatic, maintainable, and scalable data and reporting solutions
Qualifications & Requirements
Educational Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Engineering, Information Systems, Mathematics, or a related technical field — mandatory for this role
- Relevant Microsoft Azure certifications (DP-203, PL-300, or equivalent) are a meaningful professional advantage
Experience Requirements
- Minimum 3 years of hands-on experience in data engineering or data platform development — with 6+ years required for senior-level consideration
- Demonstrated experience developing, testing, and independently shipping production-ready data pipelines in a commercial data engineering environment
- Experience in trading, logistics, supply chain, or commodity markets environments is a beneficial background for this specific role
Technical Skills
- Strong SQL skills with deep experience in relational databases, complex query writing, and data transformation logic — essential for this role
- Hands-on experience with Power BI — covering DAX, data modelling, row-level security implementation, and performance optimisation for large datasets
- Experience developing ETL/ELT pipelines using Azure Data Factory, Azure Synapse Analytics, or Microsoft Fabric — at least one is required
- Proven experience integrating ERP or CRM systems — particularly JD Edwards, SAP, or Salesforce — into a centralised analytics or data warehouse environment
- Solid understanding of transactional versus analytical data modelling and modern data warehousing approaches (star schema, lake house, medallion architecture)
- Familiarity with Azure-based cloud data architectures and experience operating within a Microsoft-first technology environment
- Exposure to Microsoft Power Platform (Power Automate, Power Apps) and Python scripting for data pipeline development are additional advantages
- Strong communication skills — able to translate complex technical data concepts into clear, actionable business language for non-technical stakeholders
