Position Overview
The Software Engineer at FT Partners in San Francisco is a high-ownership, full-stack development role building and maintaining FT Base — the company’s mission-critical internal project management and data platform used across FT Partners’ global operations. You will execute on feature development, refactoring, and architectural improvements across a codebase built in Python, Django (DRF), TypeScript, React, and PostgreSQL — including an MCP server that delivers data and interactivity to employees through enterprise AI tooling. This role demands a technically strong, AI-fluent engineer who writes stable, maintainable code, thinks in systems rather than features, and brings the ownership mindset to produce reliable software without accumulating technical debt.
Why This Role Matters: As Software Engineer at FT Partners, you are building the digital backbone of one of fintech’s most prestigious investment banks. FT Base runs every operation across FT Partners globally — and your contributions directly shape the reliability, efficiency, and intelligence of that platform. You will work with cutting-edge AI development tooling to ship stable, well-documented features, contribute to an MCP server powering enterprise AI interactions for employees, collaborate with a sharp, driven team on a genuinely mission-critical application, and build a high-impact engineering career at the intersection of fintech, AI, and institutional-grade software development.
Key Responsibilities
Feature Development & Codebase Ownership
- Execute on instructions to build new features, improve existing functionality, refactor legacy code, or cleanly remove outdated features from FT Base
- Produce stable, reliable features across the Python, Django (DRF), TypeScript, React, and PostgreSQL stack without accumulating technical debt
- Immerse yourself deeply in the context and business requirements of each functional area within FT Base’s broad internal application suite
- Make informed, well-reasoned recommendations on how to progress projects — whether through growth, simplification, or better alignment with adjacent system areas
AI-Assisted Development
- Apply strong AI prompt-driven development skills backed by genuine technical understanding to accelerate feature delivery without sacrificing quality
- Critically review, explain, and verify all AI-produced code before submission — ensuring correctness, maintainability, and compatibility with the existing codebase
- Navigate and overcome the obstacles that commonly arise beyond the prototype phase, steering AI-assisted work toward cohesive, scalable systems
- Contribute to and support the MCP server that delivers data and AI-powered interactivity to FT Partners employees through enterprise AI tooling
Application Review & Engineering Standards
- Review and evaluate applications or prototypes built outside the engineering department — helping steer, rebuild, refactor, or secure them as appropriate
- Maintain rigorous test coverage across new and existing features to support platform stability and confidence in deployments
- Write clear, useful documentation that enables teammates and future engineers to understand, maintain, and extend the codebase effectively
- Participate actively in code review, technical discussions, and collaborative engineering decisions across the team
Systems Thinking & Sustainable Architecture
- Think in systems rather than isolated features — maintaining awareness of how new work integrates with and impacts the broader FT Base architecture
- Actively resist unnecessary complexity and evaluate the maintenance burden of every feature or architectural decision before implementing
- Help organise, consolidate, and strengthen the existing software suite for sustained long-term impact as FT Partners continues to grow
- Bring flexible, business-pressure-aware engineering judgement — understanding when pragmatism and when rigour is the right choice
Qualifications & Requirements
Experience Requirements
- 5+ years of professional experience as a Software Engineer in a web application development environment, or
- 2 years of professional software engineering experience combined with a reputable bootcamp certification demonstrating applied skills, or
- A 4-year engineering degree combined with meaningful projects or professional work experience demonstrating genuine engineering capability
Technical Skills
- Proficiency in Python and TypeScript — the primary languages of the FT Base application stack
- Strong understanding of REST APIs, Git version control workflows, and web application system design principles and patterns
- Django and Django REST Framework (DRF) experience is a significant advantage — actively listed as a preferred qualification
- AWS or cloud infrastructure experience is beneficial for supporting FT Base’s deployment and operational needs
AI Development Skills
- Strong practical AI prompt-driven development abilities — you actively use AI tooling to write, debug, and accelerate code production
- Ability to confidently explain, verify, and take full ownership of any AI-produced code you submit for review or deployment
- Demonstrated experience moving AI-assisted projects beyond the prototype phase into stable, production-ready, scalable systems
- Systems-oriented instinct — building with cohesion and long-term compatibility in mind, not just getting something to work today
Ideal Mindset & Soft Skills
- Responsible and organised — you funnel ideas into sustainable, compatible features rather than breaking ground and leaving problems behind
- Attentive to detail, collaborative by nature, and genuinely open to asking questions and sharing knowledge with teammates
- Committed to writing well-tested, well-documented code that future engineers will appreciate rather than dread
- Flexible to business pressures and constraints — understanding that great engineering serves real business needs, not the other way around
