Position Overview

The Supply Specialist at Rio Tinto’s Boron, California operation is a permanent warehouse and inventory role at the operational core of the world’s largest open-pit borax mine. You will be responsible for receiving, tracking, and distributing materials and supplies across the facility — ensuring the Borax plant always has what it needs to run efficiently and safely. Day-to-day duties include conducting inventory surveys, determining reorder points, performing economic order quantity calculations, transporting materials to delivery locations, completing clerical and data entry tasks, and operating equipment as required. This role reports to the Supervisor of Maintenance and Services and sits within a world-class operations team that values safety, inclusion, and continuous learning.

 Key Responsibilities

Materials Distribution & Transportation

  • Transport materials and supplies to appropriate delivery locations across the Borax plant facility — ensuring timely, accurate delivery to all departments and work areas
  • Operate equipment as required by job duties — including forklifts, pallet jacks, or other warehouse equipment — in full compliance with Rio Tinto safety standards and operational procedures
  • Adhere to all site-wide Health, Safety, Environmental, and Quality (HSEQ) compliance standards throughout all material handling and transportation activities

Inventory Control & Warehouse Operations

  • Conduct comprehensive inventory surveys of materials and supplies on hand — maintaining accurate, up-to-date stock records across all warehouse locations
  • Determine reorder points for critical materials and perform economic order quantity (EOQ) calculations to ensure optimal stock levels without over-ordering or creating shortages
  • Initiate and process file changes on stocked items — keeping the inventory management system current, accurate, and audit-ready at all times
  • Maintain a detail-oriented, organized approach to all stock control activities in a fast-paced mining operations environment

Clerical & Administrative Support

  • Perform clerical tasks including receipt inputs for all inbound shipments, return-to-stores inputs, compiling and typing operational reports, filing documentation, and accurate data entry into warehouse systems
  • Answer department telephones in a professional, efficient manner — directing inquiries appropriately and supporting communication across the maintenance and services team
  • Handle multiple administrative tasks simultaneously while maintaining accuracy, efficiency, and a courteous manner — even during high-demand operational periods

Safety & Compliance

Qualifications & Requirements

Required Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED — minimum educational requirement for this permanent full-time Supply Specialist role
  • Valid California state driver’s license — required for material transportation activities across the mine site
  • Must be able to read and write in English and demonstrate solid basic mathematical skills for inventory calculations and reorder point analysis
  • Computer literacy is required — must be comfortable using warehouse management systems, data entry platforms, and standard office software

Experience & Skills

  • Prior experience in inventory control and warehousing is preferred — candidates with direct warehouse or supply chain experience will have a strong advantage
