Position Overview
The Farm Director at Carnes Crossroads manages farm crew and all aspects of vegetable, fruit, and herb production — including seeding, planting, pest and fertility management, irrigation, harvesting, and post-harvest handling. The role also manages the Farm Share program, maintains farm infrastructure, oversees purchasing and budget, fosters resident engagement through workshops and events, and provides friendly customer service while working closely with the POA, developer staff, and resident volunteers.

Key Responsibilities
Production & Crew Management
- Manage farm crew and all aspects of vegetable, fruit, and herb production
- Oversee seeding, planting, pest, disease, and fertility management
- Handle field cultivation, irrigation, harvesting, and post-harvest handling
Farm Share Program & Resident Engagement
- Manage the year-round Farm Share program, with peak production May through November
- Foster resident engagement through workshops, farm tours, and monthly farmers markets
- Host community events and provide friendly customer service in person and by phone
Infrastructure & Operations
- Maintain farm infrastructure and landscape with contracted vendor support
- Keep the store, barn, and surroundings clean and orderly
- Manage farm purchasing, inventory, and operating budget within guidelines
Team Collaboration & Support
- Foster team spirit and positive working relations with POA, developer staff, and volunteers
- Assist the POA team with events as needed
- Uphold product and food safety standards, including record keeping
Qualifications & Requirements
Experience Requirements
- At least 4 years of organic vegetable production and farm management experience on a similar or larger scale
- Experience supervising, coaching, and developing farm staff in a positive, accountable environment
- Proven experience independently operating a tractor with various implements
Physical & Scheduling Requirements
- Ability to work in various weather conditions and stand for extended periods
- Ability to repeatedly lift and move up to 50 lbs
- Occasional nights and weekend work required; valid driver’s license required
Essential Skills
- Strong interpersonal communication and organizational skills
- Demonstrated attention to detail, record keeping, and efficient systems experience
- Carpentry skills, general “fix it” know-how, and basic tool/equipment maintenance
- Comfortable using point-of-sale systems, inventory software, and Microsoft Office
- Enthusiasm for local and sustainable agriculture; continuous-improvement mindset
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in a highly visible leadership position
- GAP training and Pesticide applicator license certifications
- Retail experience and knowledge of fruit production
