Position Overview
The Field Technical Support Technician at eShepherd in Kansas is a uniquely hands-on, mission-critical role at the frontline of agricultural technology transformation across North America. You will troubleshoot technical issues both remotely and directly on ranches — diagnosing hardware, electronics, firmware, and connectivity challenges on eShepherd’s virtual fencing platform; supporting product installations and maintenance; delivering practical customer training to ranchers and rural contractors; building trusted, long-term relationships with producers across the territory; translating complex technical challenges into practical, actionable solutions; and working closely with eShepherd’s Product, R&D, and Engineering teams to communicate field insights that directly improve future product releases and customer success outcomes.
Why This Role Matters: At eShepherd, the Field Technical Support Technician is not a helpdesk role — you are the human face of a technology platform that is changing how ranchers manage livestock across twenty countries. When a connectivity issue stops a virtual fence from working, cattle can get into a neighbor’s pasture or escape a grazing rotation that took weeks to plan. When you solve that problem — on a ranch in Kansas, via a remote session, or through a product insight that prevents it happening again — you are directly protecting livelihoods, improving animal welfare, and advancing the future of sustainable agricultural management at real ranches, with real people who depend on the technology to work.
Key Responsibilities
Field & Remote Technical Troubleshooting
- Troubleshoot technical issues with eShepherd’s virtual fencing platform both remotely and directly on-ranch — diagnosing hardware malfunctions, electronics faults, firmware performance issues, and connectivity failures on the eShepherd system across the North American territory
- Investigate hardware, firmware, and connectivity challenges methodically and thoroughly — identifying root causes, implementing practical solutions, and documenting findings in a way that contributes to eShepherd’s product improvement and knowledge base
- Take full ownership of technical issues from initial report through to resolution — following problems through to completion without leaving ranchers in uncertainty, and communicating clearly at every step about status and expected timeline to fix
Installation Support, Maintenance & Customer Training
- Support eShepherd product installations and system maintenance across ranch locations in the North American territory — ensuring every installation is correctly configured, tested, and handed over to the rancher with confidence that the system is working correctly
- Deliver practical, accessible customer training to ranchers and rural contractors — explaining how the virtual fencing technology works, how to monitor and manage the system, and how to identify and report issues — in plain language that is genuinely useful to people whose primary expertise is livestock, not technology
- Support ranchers through the early adoption phase of virtual fencing — building their confidence in the technology, answering operational questions, and proactively checking in on system performance to maximize successful adoption and long-term customer retention
Rancher Relationship Building & Customer Success
- Build trusted, long-term relationships with ranchers, ranch managers, and rural contractors across the North American territory — understanding their operations, their challenges, and their livestock management goals so you can position eShepherd’s technology as a genuine, practical solution that makes their working lives better
- Help drive greater customer adoption and success — proactively engaging with ranchers to maximize their use of the virtual fencing platform, identifying opportunities to expand deployment across additional paddocks or herds, and capturing feedback that informs eShepherd’s commercial and product development decisions
- Serve as the primary technical point of contact for ranchers in the territory — being the person they trust to pick up the phone when something goes wrong and to know how to fix it, or to get the right people involved if needed
Product Feedback, R&D Collaboration & Continuous Improvement
- Work closely with eShepherd’s Product, R&D, and Engineering teams to communicate field observations, recurring technical issues, and customer feedback that can directly improve future product releases — serving as the critical connection between what ranchers experience on the ground and what the development team builds into the next version of the platform
- Translate complex technical issues into practical solutions for ranchers and into clear, structured feedback reports for the Product and Engineering teams — bridging the gap between technical complexity and customer-friendly communication in both directions
- Contribute to the development of better support processes, diagnostic tools, installation guides, and training materials — helping eShepherd build a more scalable, efficient, and effective customer support function as the North American business grows
What eShepherd Is Looking For
Core Qualities & Mindset
- Genuine love of solving technical problems — intellectually curious, diagnostically methodical, and personally motivated to understand why something isn’t working and to fix it properly rather than just temporarily
- Enjoyment of working directly with customers — patient, empathetic, and skilled at building trust with people who may not be technically sophisticated but who depend completely on the technology functioning reliably
- Equal comfort with hardware and software challenges — able to diagnose a physical device issue one moment and investigate a firmware or connectivity problem the next, without needing to hand off between specialist teams for routine issues
- Thrives in a hands-on, fast-moving environment — energized by variety, comfortable with the physical demands of ranch environments, and happy to be in the field rather than behind a desk
Technical & Communication Skills
- Strong ability to explain technical concepts in simple, practical language — able to make virtual fencing technology immediately understandable and manageable for ranchers who are experts in cattle and land, not electronics
- Demonstrated ability to take full ownership of technical issues — following problems through from initial contact to complete resolution without losing track, and keeping customers informed throughout the process
- Comfort with remote technical support tools and methodologies — able to diagnose and guide resolution of technical issues without always being physically present at the ranch
- Agricultural background or familiarity with ranch operations and livestock management is a genuine advantage — understanding the rancher’s context and operational priorities helps enormously in this role
