When a tunnel boring machine is running, someone has to be in charge of the shift. The Shift Engineer keeps the TBM advancing safely, watches the ground and makes sure every ring is built to specification. If you thrive underground and enjoy coordinating many teams at once, this is a serious technical role.
About the Role
You will coordinate and oversee all TBM tunnelling activities during your assigned shift. That means watching machine parameters such as advance rate, thrust, torque, cutterhead performance, face pressure, penetration rate and alignment, and tracking ground conditions and settlement data so the work stays within design limits. You will also supervise segment erection, ring construction and annular grouting, and keep spoil removal and material supply flowing.
Career Impact & Growth Opportunity
Hands-on shift leadership on a TBM drive is valuable experience in a specialised field. It can lead toward Senior Shift Engineer, Tunnel Manager or Construction Manager positions on future underground projects.
Why This Role Matters
Small delays and ground surprises cost a lot underground. Quick reporting, clear handovers and strict method statements keep people safe and the project on programme.
Key Responsibilities
- Coordinate TBM tunnelling activities during the shift for safe, uninterrupted operations
- Monitor TBM parameters, ground conditions and settlement data
- Supervise segment erection, ring construction, annular grouting and quality control
- Coordinate spoil removal, material and segment delivery, grout logistics and backup systems
- Track shift progress against targets and act on delays or performance issues
- Work with TBM operations, engineering, survey, geotechnical, QA/QC, maintenance and HSE teams
- Report risks, equipment faults and abnormal ground behaviour, and follow method statements and permits
- Keep accurate shift records and give full handovers to the incoming shift
Qualifications & Requirements
- The listing does not state education or years of experience
- Practical TBM or tunnelling knowledge is clearly required
- Understanding of segmental lining, grouting and geotechnical monitoring
- Strong coordination, reporting and troubleshooting skills
- Commitment to HSE procedures, risk assessments and permit requirements
About This Opportunity
The listing does not mention salary or benefits. Ask about pay, rotation, accommodation and visa before accepting.
Who Should Apply
Tunnelling and civil engineers who already work on TBM drives, and who stay clear-headed during shift handovers and problems, should apply.
