Position Overview

The Agricultural Technician at NAPI in Farmington, NM works under the direction of the Assistant Agronomist to collect and provide accurate technical data to Crop Foremen and Crop Managers through daily field inspections. This hands-on, field-based role monitors crop conditions and development stages, performs quality inspections in compliance with USDA standards, collects soil and plant tissue samples, maintains georeferenced field data using field data recorders and GIS tools, identifies and reports crop stress, insect infestation and disease issues, analyzes soil and contour maps, develops site-specific crop management plans and provides administrative support to departmental agronomy projects — all while maintaining NAPI’s commitments to food safety, EH&S compliance and professional teamwork.

Key Responsibilities

Field Scouting, Sampling & Crop Monitoring

• Perform daily field scouting across NAPI’s irrigated croplands — systematically identifying plant moisture stress, insect infestation, plant diseases and other crop health issues that require prompt agronomic attention.
• Report all crop problems detected during scouting immediately to the Assistant Agronomist, Agronomist and/or Crop Manager — ensuring rapid agronomic response that protects crop yield and quality.
• Collect soil and plant tissue samples systematically and accurately from assigned fields — following NAPI protocols for sampling depth, frequency, labelling and submission for laboratory analysis.
• Record, maintain and collect accurate scientific data on assigned fields at various stages of crop development — providing timely, reliable information to Crop Foremen and Crop Managers to support effective field management decisions.

GIS Data Collection & Precision Agronomy

• Collect information about soil and field attributes, yield data and field boundaries using field data recorders and basic geographic information systems (GIS) — building accurate, georeferenced datasets that support site-specific crop management.
• Divide agricultural fields into georeferenced zones based on soil characteristics and production potentials — supporting variable rate application planning and precision agriculture practices across NAPI’s farming operations.
• Compare crop yield maps with soil test data, chemical application pattern maps and other agronomic data — developing site-specific crop management plans that optimize input efficiency and maximize yield potential across NAPI fields.
• Analyze and interpret soil maps, contour maps and plat maps — applying spatial analysis skills to support agronomic planning, drainage management and field boundary documentation requirements.

USDA Compliance, Documentation & Administrative Support

• Comply with all NAPI quality controls in accordance with USDA standards relating to inspection, grading, sorting, handling and shipments — ensuring NAPI’s food safety commitments are upheld consistently across all production activities.
• Document and maintain accurate records of soil and tissue sampling information, field inspection results and crop monitoring data — ensuring all data is complete, correctly labelled and readily accessible for agronomic review and compliance purposes.
• Provide administrative support to departmental agronomy projects — assisting with data entry, report preparation, record management and other project support activities as directed by the Assistant Agronomist.
• Comply with all applicable environmental health and safety (EH&S) policies, procedures and work rules — performing all job functions in a manner that protects the health and safety of the incumbent, co-workers and the general public.

Qualifications & Requirements

Educational & Experience Background

• Education or experience in Agronomy, Crop Science, Agricultural Technology, Plant Science, Soil Science or a closely related field — providing the foundational scientific knowledge needed for accurate crop scouting, soil sampling and field data collection.
• Familiarity with GIS software and field data recorder tools — or demonstrated willingness and aptitude to learn GIS-based precision agriculture data collection methods during NAPI’s structured onboarding process.
• Knowledge of or experience with USDA agricultural quality standards — including inspection, grading and food safety compliance relevant to irrigated crop production in New Mexico.
