Key Responsibilities

Product Specification, Design & Standards Compliance

  • Define product specifications, features, and functionalities for new and enhanced busbar trunking products — translating market requirements, customer needs, and competitive positioning insights from Offering Management and Marketing teams into clear, achievable product design targets that can be realised within the product development programme timeline and budget
  • Develop product designs in accordance with applicable product standards — specifically IEC61439 (Low-voltage switchgear and controlgear assemblies) and UL857 (Busways) — ensuring that all design decisions are made with full awareness of and compliance with the relevant safety, performance, and testing requirements of these internationally recognised electrical product standards
  • Ensure adherence to safety and regulatory standards throughout the design development process — conducting design reviews at appropriate development stages, verifying compliance of design decisions against applicable standards, and ensuring that the completed product design provides the basis for successful type testing and regulatory approval
  • Follow the engineering change process for modifications to existing products — initiating and documenting engineering change requests through the approved change control procedure, ensuring that all affected documentation, drawings, and PLM records are correctly updated and that downstream manufacturing, quality, and supply chain functions are informed of approved changes

3D Modelling, 2D Drafting & Prototype Development

  • Create detailed 3D parametric models of busbar trunking product designs using Creo Parametric or SolidWorks — developing models with the level of geometric detail, feature intelligence, and configuration management structure required to support production drawing derivation, assembly simulation, interference checking, and downstream manufacturing process planning

  • Apply DFM (Design for Manufacturing) principles throughout the design development process — proactively considering the manufacturability of design decisions at each stage, consulting with manufacturing engineers and production teams to validate that design features can be produced accurately and economically, and incorporating design modifications that improve production yield, reduce scrap, and minimise manufacturing cycle time

NPDI Process, Supplier Coordination & Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Adhere to the department’s NPDI (New Product Development and Introduction) process for all new product development activities — completing all required documentation at each NPDI stage gate, maintaining programme schedules, and contributing the design engineering deliverables that gate reviews require to authorise progression to the next development phase
  • Work closely with external suppliers and manufacturing partners to source components and materials for new product designs — providing suppliers with clear technical specifications and design data, evaluating supplier proposals and samples against design requirements, and collaborating with procurement to ensure that component sourcing decisions support both design intent and supply chain resilience

Qualifications & Requirements

Education

Experience Requirements

  • 3+ years of professional experience in product design within a manufacturing environment — or directly related engineering design experience with demonstrated proficiency in 3D CAD modelling, engineering drawing production, and product development process participation
  • Experience designing mild steel sheet welded assemblies, extruded and injection-moulded plastic parts and assemblies — directly applicable to busbar trunking product design which routinely incorporates these component types
  • Knowledge and application experience of DFM (Design for Manufacturing), DFA (Design for Assembly), and DFE (Design for Environment) principles — demonstrating that design decisions are made with production, assembly, and environmental considerations integrated from the earliest design stage
