Position Overview

The Agriculturist at Michigan Sugar Company is a trusted field-based advisor who works directly with grower-shareholders across the West District of Michigan. Operating fully remotely, this professional provides practical agronomic guidance to optimize sugar beet crop performance while ensuring growers stay aligned with cooperative requirements and programs. From scouting fields for pests and diseases during the growing season to managing early delivery lotteries during harvest, this position touches every critical stage of the sugar beet production cycle. Key Responsibilities

Agronomic Advisory & Grower Support

  • Serve as the primary agronomy contact for assigned sugar beet growers across the West District
  • Provide expert guidance on soil fertility, crop health, variety selection, and best planting practices
  • Scout fields throughout the growing season and identify emergence issues, disease, insects, and weeds
  • Deliver trusted, practical advice that directly improves grower profitability and crop quality

Cooperative Program Guidance

  • Guide shareholders through contracting, share transfers, and early delivery programs
  • Track sugar beet acreage and yields from contracting stage through final harvest
  • Manage assigned early delivery lotteries in coordination with operations teams
  • Ensure growers meet all Michigan Sugar Company cooperative requirements efficiently

Harvest & Storage Monitoring

  • Assist in monitoring incoming beet loads during harvest to ensure proper storage conditions
  • Support long-term beet quality management from field to factory
  • Partner with Agricultural Operations and shareholders to support smooth harvest execution
  • Work with Ag Logistics to support Maus operations and field-to-plant transitions

Collaboration & Communications

  • Collaborate with Agronomists and Agronomy Managers to implement grower-beneficial practices
  • Support Ag Communications and departmental outreach programs
  • Promote Michigan Sugar Company positively and professionally in all grower and public interactions
  • Support youth and young farmer outreach initiatives across Michigan agricultural communities

Qualifications & Requirements

Educational Requirements

  • Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Agronomy, Crop Science, Agricultural Science, or a related field
  • Equivalent hands-on experience in agronomic consulting or crop production will also be considered

Experience Requirements

  • Prior experience in field consulting or agronomic support is strongly preferred
  • Knowledge of sugar beet production, Midwest row crops, or similar specialty crops is a plus
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite — Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
