Position Overview

The Agronomist at The Maschhoffs in Carlyle, Illinois provides expert environmental consultation services to production partners and company-owned facilities, with a strong focus on nutrient planning and livestock environmental compliance. You will maintain Certified Livestock Manager credentials, develop comprehensive nutrient management plans, oversee the environmental management system, perform field research and manure sampling, interpret legal land easements, and negotiate competitive manure recovery agreements — all while ensuring full Federal and State regulatory compliance across all operations.

 Key Responsibilities

Environmental Consultation & Nutrient Planning

  • Provide expert environmental consultation services to production partners and all company-owned or managed facilities
  • Lead development of comprehensive nutrient management plans using data entry, technical analysis, and field research
  • Maintain a broad and comprehensive knowledge base in environmental regulations, nutrient management, and applied agronomy
  • Perform field research and manure sampling, processing collected data to build and maintain robust waste management plans

Regulatory Compliance & Legal Agreements

  • Partner with company-owned or managed farms to maintain full regulatory compliance per Federal and State regulations
  • Interpret and negotiate legal land easements and manure agreements with landowners and production partners
  • Negotiate and create competitive manure recovery agreements for company-owned or managed facilities
  • Support development of livestock construction permits requiring technical compliance documentation and regulatory analysis

Environmental Management System Leadership

  • Oversee the implementation of the Environmental Management System (EMS) across all company facilities
  • Develop and lead the integration of new facilities and individuals into the established EMS framework
  • Maintain Certified Livestock Manager credentials through the Department of Agriculture as required by the role
  • Ensure continued professional development in environmental regulations, odor and emissions, and agronomy best practices

Field Research, Sampling & Reporting

  • Conduct regular field visits to farms to perform manure sampling and environmental monitoring activities
  • Utilize GIS applications, RUSLE2, and the Phosphorus Index to support nutrient planning and environmental analysis
  • Maintain complete and accurate records of all environmental compliance activities, plans, and field data collected
  • Provide limited operational support to the manure operations team as required during the agricultural season

Qualifications & Requirements

Educational Requirements

  • Associate Degree preferred in Agronomy, Soils, Animal Science, Environmental Science, or a related field
  • 5 additional years of relevant experience may be substituted for the degree requirement where applicable

Experience Requirements

  • 2–5 years of experience in agriculture consulting, agriculture retail sales, production, research, or customer service
  • Certified Livestock Manager (CLM) credential required — must be obtained through the Department of Agriculture
  • Certified Crop Advisor (CCA) designation is preferred and will strengthen your application significantly

Essential Skills & Technical Knowledge

  • Strong knowledge of crop farming systems, livestock production systems, and nutrient management principles
  • Familiarity with conservation and nutrient planning principles and livestock regulatory compliance requirements
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, SharePoint, GIS applications, RUSLE2, and the Phosphorus Index tools
  • Ability to operate field technology and sampling equipment independently in various outdoor working conditions
