Horticulturist Position Overview
The Horticulturist role at Musco Lighting in Oskaloosa is about keeping living spaces healthy and cared for across the company’s facilities, both inside the buildings and outdoors. Plants add a great deal to how a workplace feels, and this team takes that seriously. Day to day, you’ll help with the full cycle of plant care: planning and preparing planting areas, planting, watering, pruning, and ongoing maintenance of trees, shrubs, annuals, perennials, foliage plants, and tropical plants. Plant health is where your horticultural knowledge comes into play. You’ll watch for signs of pests, diseases, and other concerns, recommend the right treatment, and carry out corrective action so that problems don’t spread. Soil matters as well, and you’ll use diagnostic equipment to monitor soil pH and electrical conductivity so that plants get the conditions they need. Beyond the plants themselves, the role is also about sharing knowledge. You’ll contribute to the monthly Greenhouse newsletter, help teach small horticulture-related classes, and answer plant care questions from colleagues, including helping with desk plants. Good records help the team improve over time, so you’ll document the processes and best practices used to maintain plant material and growing areas. The work is active and often outdoors, with physical tasks such as lifting, working at heights, and using gardening tools, and it sometimes includes rotating weekends and holidays.
As Horticulturist, you’ll build practical experience in plant health, indoor and outdoor care, and facilities horticulture, while growing your skills in communication, teamwork, and problem-solving. The ideal candidate has a degree in horticulture or at least two years of relevant horticulture experience, and knows how to identify and treat plant pests and diseases. Comfort with hands-on manual work, working at heights, and being outdoors in extreme heat and cold is important, as is the ability to lift up to 50 pounds independently and more with help. Basic computer skills and experience with Microsoft 365 will help with reporting and documentation, and a valid Iowa driver’s license is required for travel between sites in a company vehicle. Strong attention to detail, initiative, and a collaborative mindset will serve you well, and familiarity with Musco’s lighting solutions is a plus. For horticulture graduates and plant care professionals in eastern Iowa who want to work in a people-focused, team-first company, this role offers a meaningful place to grow.
Why This Role Matters: As Horticulturist at Musco Lighting, you help create healthy, attractive spaces that team members and visitors enjoy every day, apply horticultural expertise to real plant health problems, share plant care knowledge through newsletters and classes, document best practice for the team, work within a team-first culture with strong benefits, and build an entry-level career in facilities horticulture in Iowa.
