Key Responsibilities
Microbiological Testing & Laboratory Operations
- Perform comprehensive microbiological testing across all assigned test systems and patient samples — including microbial culture and isolation, organism identification, antimicrobial susceptibility testing, and contamination investigation — in full compliance with CAP, CLIA, and internal standard operating procedures
- Conduct microbial culture procedures using appropriate media selection, incubation conditions, and colonial morphology assessment — accurately identifying pathogenic and non-pathogenic organisms to the species level using biochemical, serological, and automated identification methods
- Perform antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) and interpret results according to CLSI breakpoints — ensuring accurate reporting of minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) and susceptibility interpretations that guide appropriate clinical antimicrobial therapy
- Maintain strict adherence to biosafety protocols, infection control guidelines, and personal protective equipment requirements throughout all laboratory operations — ensuring the safety of laboratory personnel, patients, and the broader clinical environment
QA/QC Monitoring & Compliance Documentation
- Review and monitor QA/QC documentation on a daily and weekly basis — ensuring ongoing compliance with CAP accreditation standards, CLIA regulatory requirements, and the laboratory’s internal quality management system
- Ensure proper documentation, reporting, and investigation of quality incidents, analytical errors, and non-conformities — conducting structured root cause analysis and implementing effective corrective and preventive actions to prevent recurrence
- Monitor internal quality control performance — reviewing Levey-Jennings charts, applying Westgard rules, and investigating out-of-control situations systematically to maintain the analytical reliability of all microbiological test systems
- Support the development and implementation of laboratory standard operating procedures (SOPs) and quality improvement initiatives — contributing scientific expertise and operational insight that continuously elevates the laboratory’s quality management capabilities
CAP Inspections, Audits & Proficiency Testing
- Actively participate in internal and external laboratory audits — including full CAP inspection preparation, checklist completion, documentation review, and real-time support during on-site CAP inspector visits
- Oversee and directly participate in all Proficiency Testing (PT) cycles — ensuring samples are tested on time, results are reported accurately within submission deadlines, and all PT documentation is complete and audit-ready
- Follow up on PT failures and unsatisfactory results — conducting thorough investigations, implementing corrective actions, and completing all required PT remediation documentation in accordance with CAP and DHA requirements
- Maintain comprehensive records of all audit activities, corrective actions, CAP inspection responses, and PT cycle participation — ensuring complete, traceable documentation that supports the laboratory’s ongoing CAP accreditation status
Junior Staff Training, Mentorship & Team Development
- Provide structured training and professional mentorship to junior laboratory staff and newly hired technologists — covering microbiological testing techniques, QA/QC principles, CAP compliance requirements, biosafety protocols, and LIS utilisation
- Assess junior staff competency through direct observation, practical evaluation, and competency testing — documenting all competency assessments in compliance with CAP and CLIA requirements and providing targeted feedback that accelerates professional development
- Foster a positive, collaborative, and quality-focused team culture within the Microbiology Department — creating a learning environment where scientific curiosity, attention to detail, and commitment to patient safety are actively valued and encouraged
- Collaborate with other laboratory departments, clinical staff, and the Laboratory Manager to ensure timely communication, effective resolution of quality-related issues, and seamless integration of the Microbiology Department within the broader laboratory service
Regulatory Compliance & Professional Development
- Stay continuously updated with current best practices, emerging regulatory requirements, and advances in diagnostic microbiology — proactively applying relevant updates to the laboratory’s testing protocols, quality systems, and SOP library
- Maintain proficiency with Laboratory Information System (LIS) operation — accurately entering test orders, verifying and validating results, managing worklists, and generating reports in compliance with the laboratory’s data management and patient confidentiality standards
