Role Overview – QA Executive Microbiologist
The QA Executive – Microbiologist is responsible for ensuring microbiological safety of raw materials, packaging materials, production environments, and finished food products. This role focuses on laboratory testing, environmental swabbing, hygiene validation, pathogen detection, and compliance with global food safety standards.
You will work closely with QA Managers, production teams, procurement, and audit teams to ensure strict adherence to food safety management systems.
Key Responsibilities
1. Raw Material (RM) & Packaging Material (PM) Control
- Inspect incoming raw materials and food contact packaging
- Perform microbiological sampling and analysis
- Verify compliance with technical specifications
- Raise non-conformance reports for rejected materials
- Coordinate with procurement and goods-in teams
This function ensures safe ingredient sourcing and reduces contamination risk at the earliest stage.
2. Environmental & Hygiene Monitoring
- Execute environmental swabbing programs
- Monitor food contact surfaces post-cleaning
- Conduct personnel hygiene swabs (hand & glove testing)
- Perform air quality sampling in production zones
- Trend and report microbiological data
Environmental monitoring programs are essential for preventing cross-contamination and ensuring compliance with Global Food Safety Standards.
3. Microbiological Analysis & Pathogen Testing
- Prepare microbiological media and samples
- Test finished goods and raw materials for:
- Total Plate Count (TPC)
- Coliforms
- E. coli
- Yeasts and Moulds
- Maintain accurate laboratory documentation
- Monitor incubation temperatures
- Calibrate lab equipment regularly
Expertise in aseptic techniques, pathogen detection, and indicator organism analysis is critical in this role.
4. GEMBA Walks & Production Integration
- Lead weekly GEMBA walks on production floor
- Identify microbiological risks such as condensation and temperature abuse
- Provide coaching to production staff
- Close hygiene gaps with stakeholders
This hands-on integration ensures proactive risk management rather than reactive corrections.
5. In-Process Quality Inspection
- Verify production parameters (temperature, weight, appearance)
- Monitor Critical Control Points (CCPs)
- Assist in customer complaint investigations
- Conduct root cause analysis for microbiological failures
6. Compliance & Continuous Improvement
- Ensure compliance with Global Standard for Food Safety
- Support internal and external food safety audits
- Assist in cleaning validation (ATP testing)
- Improve hygiene and sanitation programs
Qualifications & Experience
Education
- Bachelor’s Degree (BSc) in Microbiology, Food Science, or related discipline
Experience
- 2–4 years in food manufacturing laboratory
- Experience in fresh or chilled food production preferred
- Strong knowledge of spoilage organisms and pathogens
