Position Overview
This Tunnel Engineer (TBM Survey Engineer) role prepares daily/weekly survey reports and trend analysis of alignment deviations, assists in monitoring TBM tunneling operations including alignment checks and surface monitoring, supports traverse calculations and tunnel virtual axis reviews, establishes and maintains control networks inside the tunnel, reviews TBM guidance data and roll/pitch/yaw deviations, participates in breakthrough preparations, and assists with wriggle surveys, as-built surveys, and shop drawing reviews under the direction of the Tunnel Engineer.

Key Responsibilities
Survey Reporting & Alignment Monitoring
- Prepare daily/weekly survey reports, including trend analysis of alignment deviations
- Assist in monitoring TBM tunneling operations, including alignment checks and surface monitoring
- Support traverse calculations review and tunnel virtual axis calculation checks
Control Networks & TBM Guidance
- Establish and maintain primary and secondary control networks inside the tunnel
- Support transfer of surface control points through shafts
- Review calculations for TBM guidance data, including laser target extension and alignment inputs
- Review and assist in checking TBM roll, pitch, and yaw, reporting deviations to senior engineers
Breakthrough & 3D Survey Support
- Participate in breakthrough preparations, including precise alignment surveys
- Conduct 3D measurements for tunnel alignment before/after breakthroughs and during TBM break-in/break-out
- Assist in wriggle surveys and as-built surveys, ensuring accurate data collection
Documentation & Coordination
- Assist in reviewing shop drawings, method statements, and survey-related documents
- Maintain daily survey logs, alignment records, and progress documentation
- Coordinate with surveyors, inspectors, and contractor teams to resolve minor survey issues
- Review calibration and maintenance validity for total stations, prisms, and TBM-integrated sensors
Quality, Compliance & Safety
- Ensure survey activities comply with project specifications, ITA guidelines, and regulatory requirements
- Support emergency response surveys in case of unexpected ground movements or machine stoppages
- Follow RTA safety procedures and promote safe work practices in the tunneling environment
Qualifications & Requirements
Educational Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Geomatics, or Structural Engineering from an accredited university
Experience Requirements
- Minimum 8 years of experience in TBM tunnel construction, surveying, or infrastructure projects
- Metro experience preferred; UAE/GCC consultancy or construction experience is an advantage
Technical Skills
- Basic understanding of TBM operations, tunneling sequences, and underground construction methods
- Familiarity with survey software and instruments (total station, laser guidance, 3D scanners)
- Ability to assist in reviewing traverse, alignment calculations, and 3D measurements
- Basic knowledge of tunneling elements (steel ribs, shotcrete, precast segments)
Essential Skills
- Ability to read engineering drawings and follow method statements
- Proficiency in MS Office and basic engineering/survey software
- Strong coordination skills for working with engineers, surveyors, and contractors
