Position Overview

The Outreach Officer at Abu Dhabi Biobank is a genuinely distinctive role in Abu Dhabi’s healthcare and biomedical research landscape — one that requires the interpersonal skills of a community health professional and the technical precision of a laboratory scientist in equal measure. On the participant engagement side, you will lead ethical, culturally appropriate recruitment of biobank participants — conducting eligibility screening, managing informed consent processes, and providing ongoing participant support that keeps Abu Dhabi’s biobank population engaged and growing. On the specimen management side, you will receive, verify, process, and track biological samples in accordance with SOPs, biosafety standards, and cold-chain requirements — ensuring that every sample entering the biobank is accurately documented in LIMS and compliant with ISO and regulatory standards.

This is not a desk-based role. The Outreach Officer at Abu Dhabi Biobank is active — in the community running outreach campaigns and education sessions, in hospital pre-processing areas coordinating specimen receipt, in the laboratory performing pre-analytical specimen processing, and at external events and collection sites representing the biobank’s mission. Regular office hours form the foundation of the schedule, but flexibility for after-hours work, weekends, on-call responsibilities, and travel to collection and recruitment sites is a genuine expectation of the role. The position may also support specialized biobanking programs including cord blood collection and maternal or neonatal specimen programs where applicable.

For a life sciences graduate with a passion for both community health engagement and biomedical research infrastructure, the Abu Dhabi Biobank Outreach Officer role offers a rare career opportunity that bridges the gap between laboratory science and public health outreach — directly advancing one of the UAE’s most important long-term biomedical research initiatives.

Why This Role Matters: As Outreach Officer at Abu Dhabi Biobank, you play a direct role in advancing the UAE’s most significant biomedical research biobank initiative, combine community health engagement skills with biological specimen science expertise in a single uniquely rewarding career position, work at the intersection of participant ethics, laboratory biosafety, LIMS data management, and ISO regulatory compliance, contribute to specialized biobanking programs including cord blood and maternal collections, and build a purposeful career in Abu Dhabi’s world-class healthcare and life sciences research ecosystem.

 Key Responsibilities

Participant Recruitment & Ethical Engagement

  • Lead ethical, culturally appropriate participant recruitment and engagement across Abu Dhabi Biobank’s Pan Human Biobank program — conducting eligibility screening, managing informed consent processes, and providing ongoing participant support in full compliance with UAE regulatory and ethical research standards
  • Build and maintain strong, trusted relationships with biobank participants, healthcare providers, clinical institutions, and external stakeholders — supporting sustained long-term engagement and outreach that grows the biobank’s participant population
  • Plan and deliver outreach, education, and community awareness activities including information sessions, public workshops, community health campaigns, and outreach events — representing the Abu Dhabi Biobank professionally at all external engagements
  • Maintain accurate, confidential, and complete recruitment records and participant data within LIMS and other biobank information systems — ensuring data integrity and compliance with UAE data protection and research ethics requirements at all times

Biological Specimen Receipt & Processing

  • Receive, verify, and document biological specimens from hospital pre-processing areas and collection sites — ensuring correct specimen labeling, chain-of-custody documentation, and full alignment with LIMS records upon receipt
  • Perform pre-analytical and specimen processing activities in full accordance with Abu Dhabi Biobank SOPs, biosafety standards, PPE requirements, and specimen stability specifications — applying cold-chain management protocols for temperature-sensitive biological materials
  • Coordinate specimen receipt and processing activities with hospital laboratory reception, logistics teams, and clinical staff to ensure seamless specimen flow from collection site to biobank storage with no loss of sample integrity or documentation accuracy
  • Support specialized biobanking specimen programs where applicable — including cord blood collection procedures and maternal or neonatal specimen management programs requiring specific handling, labeling, and processing protocols

Quality, Compliance & Training Support

  • Support quality assurance, inventory management, and regulatory compliance activities across the biobank — including incident reporting, corrective action implementation, internal audit support, and adherence to ISO biobank regulatory and certification standards
  • Coordinate and support training, education, and engagement initiatives for biobank staff, clinical partners, and participants — including training materials development, logistics coordination, scheduling, and monitoring of training effectiveness
  • Use and maintain laboratory measuring and monitoring equipment relevant to biobank specimen management activities — following calibration, maintenance, and equipment documentation protocols in accordance with biobank SOPs
  • Represent the Abu Dhabi Biobank’s values of scientific integrity, participant dignity, cultural sensitivity, and research ethics compliance in every participant and stakeholder interaction

Requirements & Qualifications

Educational Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Life Sciences, Public Health, Nursing, Healthcare Management, Biomedical Science, or a closely related field from an accredited university
  • Demonstrated theoretical and practical understanding of biomedical research ethics, informed consent processes, data protection principles, and participant confidentiality requirements

Experience Requirements

  • Minimum of one year of experience in a healthcare-related community engagement, participant recruitment, clinical research, or biobank/research laboratory setting
  • Knowledge and practical experience in laboratory practices, biosafety principles, infection control protocols, and safe handling of biological specimens including correct PPE use
  • Familiarity with LIMS (Laboratory Information Management Systems) or similar laboratory data management platforms — proficiency is preferred and will be given favorable consideration

Skills & Additional Qualifications

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills — proven ability to engage diverse UAE and GCC populations respectfully, professionally, and with cultural sensitivity in community outreach settings
  • Strong organizational, documentation, and record-keeping skills — ability to follow SOPs, regulatory manuals, and biobank guidelines consistently and accurately in a complex research environment
  • Proficiency in English and strong computer skills including MS Office applications — Arabic language skills are an additional advantage for Abu Dhabi community outreach activities
  • Additional advantages include presentation or facilitation experience, laboratory equipment maintenance skills, advanced research or ethics training, and UAE DOH or DHA professional licensure
