Position Overview
This Soil Scientist role involves auditing stockpiling, management, handling and auditing of topsoil and subsoil stockpiles to satisfy contract requirements for EKFB HS2 major infrastructure project. You will work with and direct site team in soil operations, record information about soil and its management, assess stockpiled soil condition limited to physical characteristics including plasticity and storage/handling practices, inspect soil reconditioning windrows and restored soil profiles, conduct ITP review, and provide comprehensive soil condition reports detailing restoration works undertaken on Europe’s latest high speed rail construction scheme.

Key Responsibilities
Soil Stockpile Management & Auditing
- Audit stockpiling, management, handling and auditing of topsoil and subsoil stockpiles
- Satisfy contract requirements for soil management on major HS2 infrastructure project
- Work with and direct site team in soil operations and stockpile management
- Record comprehensive information about soil and its management procedures
Soil Condition Assessment & Analysis
- Assess stockpiled soil condition limited to physical characteristics including plasticity
- Evaluate soil storage and handling practices ensuring quality standards compliance
- Conduct field surveys of soils and record natural physical properties
- Identify soil types on site including Agricultural Land Classification (ALC) grade
Soil Restoration & Profile Inspection
- Inspect soil reconditioning windrows ensuring proper treatment and handling
- Conduct inspection of restored soil profiles meeting restoration specifications
- Perform ITP (Inspection and Test Plan) review for soil restoration activities
- Apply logical approach to soil surveying and recording in-situ profile characteristics
Reporting & Documentation
- Provide comprehensive soil condition reports detailing restoration works undertaken
- Document soil replacement activities and restoration procedures thoroughly
- Prepare technical reports meeting infrastructure project standards and requirements
- Maintain accurate records of soil surveys and field observations
Site Coordination & Technical Guidance
- Work with contractors in their operations providing direction and advice
- Provide practical solutions where necessary for soil management challenges
- Lead soil scientists/practitioners carrying out soil surveys on infrastructure project
- Understand engineering/construction requirements and methodology of large construction scheme
Professional Independence & Decision-Making
- Work independently and make professional decisions on soil management matters
- Understand and follow lines of communication on major infrastructure site
- Apply confidence and experience working with contractors in operations
- Exercise professional judgment in Agricultural Land Classification assessments
Qualifications & Requirements
Educational Requirements
- Minimum of Bachelor’s Degree in Soil Science, Geography, Geology, or other relevant environmental discipline
- Advanced degree (Master’s or PhD) in soil science or related field advantageous
Professional Membership
- Member of British Society of Soil Science (M.I. Soil Sci) – Essential requirement
- Professional Soil Scientist with competence in Agricultural Land Classification (ALC)
- Demonstrated professional standing in soil science community
Experience Requirements
- Track-record in soil science research or application in professional capacity
- Preferably experience on infrastructure projects or major construction schemes
- Experience carrying out field surveys of soils and recording natural physical properties
- Sound knowledge of soils and ability to identify soil types on site including ALC grade
Technical Skills
- Proficient using GIS (Geographic Information Systems) for soil mapping and analysis
- Proficient in MS Office productivity packages for reporting and documentation
- Proficient in use of IT systems for data management and analysis
- Logical approach to soil surveying and recording in-situ soil profile characteristics
Essential Requirements
- Current CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) card holder mandatory
- Driving licence required for role – site access and field survey requirements
- Understanding of engineering/construction requirements and methodology of large schemes
- Ability to work independently and make professional decisions on site
