Position Overview
The Assistant Grower at Bejo Seeds manages day-to-day operations of the sustainability and research farm in Oberlin, Ohio. You will oversee soil preparation, planting schedules, irrigation management, fertility programs, pest and disease control, and crop rotation cycles. This is a hands-on outdoor role requiring physical stamina, critical thinking, and a passion for sustainable agriculture and seed research.

Key Responsibilities
Daily Farm Operations Management
- Manage daily farming operations across both sustainability and research farm sites
- Oversee soil preparation, planting, irrigation management, and fertility programs
- Implement effective pest and disease control strategies and crop rotation plans
- Operate and maintain farm equipment including tractors, mowers, and forklifts safely
Sustainable Farming Development
- Contribute actively to developing sustainable farming practices for improved soil health
- Support water conservation initiatives and enhanced biodiversity programs on the farm
- Work toward reducing synthetic input use through innovative sustainable methods
- Create and maintain relationships with public and private sustainable farming organizations
Research & Trial Support
- Assist with planning, logistics, and evaluation of research and sustainability trials
- Collect, organize, and interpret soil samples to support research objectives
- Work closely with the Production Research Manager to achieve project goals
- Participate in continued education and professional development relevant to the role
Farm Administration & Compliance
- Complete all required company training and follow company safety standards at all times
- Submit monthly expense and mileage reports accurately and on time
- Maintain required professional certifications as per role requirements
- Attend and actively contribute to mandatory company meetings and farm workshops
Team Collaboration & Community Engagement
- Collaborate closely with the Production Research Manager and relevant farm staff
- Assist with farm dinners, tours, and educational workshops as needed during the season
- Occasionally manage contract labor crews during peak farming periods
- Handle tasks independently and manage time effectively without constant oversight
Qualifications & Requirements
Educational Requirements
- Preferred: Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, Horticulture, Agronomic Business, Pest Management, Crop Biotechnology, or related field
Experience Requirements
- 2–3 years of hands-on farming experience (required)
- 2–3 years of tractor driving experience (required)
- 1–3 years of research trial experience (preferred)
- Valid driver’s license with a clean record; commercial driver’s license is a plus
Essential Skills
- Strong knowledge of farm management practices and sustainable agriculture methods
- Skilled tractor operator with ability to operate GPS-guided and automated equipment
- Ability to collect soil samples and interpret soil test results accurately
- Physical strength and stamina to perform manual labor in varied weather conditions
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Excel for reporting and record-keeping
- Bilingual in Spanish is a plus for team communication and labor management
