Position Overview

The Trainee Agronomist role at Frontier Agriculture is a career-defining permanent position based across Essex farmland. You will deliver a comprehensive integrated advisory service covering all aspects of crop production — from crop nutrition and crop protection to agricultural legislation guidance. Working alongside experienced commercial managers and technical support teams, you will build lasting customer relationships, conduct regular crop walks, and develop deep agronomic expertise while growing commercial awareness within the UK’s leading agriculture business.

 Key Responsibilities

Crop Advisory & Production Management

  • Deliver a comprehensive, integrated service covering all aspects of crop production including crop nutrition, crop protection, and agricultural legislation guidance
  • Maintain knowledge of end markets to provide well-informed, commercially relevant management strategy advice to farmers
  • Conduct regular crop walks to build strong, trusted customer relationships and gain insight into each farm’s evolving needs
  • Understand environmental factors and relevant agricultural schemes, supporting customers in managing them effectively at farm level

Customer Relationship Development

  • Build outstanding professional relationships with farmer customers through consistent, high-quality advisory service
  • Manage customer relationships successfully to drive long-term engagement, loyalty, and commercial satisfaction
  • Liaise closely with colleagues to identify new business opportunities, build referral relationships, and foster collaborative customer engagement
  • Proactively prospect new customers to expand Frontier’s customer base across the Essex territory

Commercial & Business Development

  • Collaborate with the Regional Sales Manager to develop and execute a clear business plan for the designated Essex area
  • Develop in-depth knowledge of Frontier’s products and services to drive commercial success and strengthen customer relationships
  • Engage with experienced commercial managers to develop both technical agronomy expertise and commercial awareness simultaneously
  • Collaborate with stakeholders and internal teams to fulfil customer orders while ensuring consistently exceptional service delivery

Technical Development & Team Collaboration

  • Partner with Frontier’s Trials and Technical Support teams to support ongoing initiatives and enhance both product and customer knowledge
  • Complete full BASIS and FACTS professional qualifications with dedicated support from Frontier’s Learning & Development team
  • Work closely with colleagues across the on-Farm Frontier team in a genuinely collaborative, knowledge-sharing environment
  • Stay current with the latest developments in agronomy, crop science, and UK agricultural policy and legislation

Qualifications & Requirements

Background & Interest

  • Strong genuine interest in agriculture and a clear desire to develop a long-term career in professional agronomy
  • A background in agriculture, crop science, environmental science, or a related field is highly advantageous
  • Prior sales experience is not required — the right attitude, curiosity, and customer focus matter most

Essential Skills

  • Ability to build outstanding professional relationships with both customers and internal colleagues
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills — confident in both written and verbal communication
  • High level of initiative with strong planning, organisation, and time management capabilities
  • Good attention to detail, particularly in crop observation, record-keeping, and customer reporting
