Key Responsibilities

Field Trial Setup, Maintenance & Plot Management

  • Set up and maintain high-quality field research trials on farms and dedicated trial sites across Warwickshire and the broader UK — ensuring all plot layouts, marking systems, and physical trial setups are established accurately and in full compliance with trial protocols
  • Prepare trial sites for the full growing season — conducting soil preparation, plot demarcation, irrigation setup where required, and all physical site management activities needed to support accurate, reproducible, and scientifically sound trial conditions
  • Maintain trial plots throughout the growing cycle — monitoring crop development, managing trial-specific interventions, and ensuring that all plots remain clearly identified, properly maintained, and free from variables that could compromise trial data integrity
  • Work independently in the field with confidence and organizational discipline — managing your own trial site schedule, vehicle logistics, and field activities with the support of an experienced Trials Manager available when needed

Product Application & Trial Protocol Compliance

  • Safely prepare and apply agricultural, horticultural, and amenity products — including pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers, and biological treatments — strictly in line with approved trial protocols, product labels, and all applicable UK health, safety, and environmental regulations
  • Follow all personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements and safe working practices during product preparation and application activities — maintaining the highest standards of personal and environmental safety at every field trial site
  • Ensure all product application activities are accurately recorded — documenting application rates, timings, equipment calibration, weather conditions, and operator records as required by trial protocols and regulatory compliance standards
  • Adapt product application methodologies as required by specific trial protocols — including modifications to equipment setup, application rates, timing, or sequence that reflect the unique requirements of individual research trials

Data Collection, Analysis & Digital Recording

  • Collect, record, and manage trial data across all assigned Agricultural, Horticultural, and Amenity sector trials — using specialist trial management software and digital data collection tools to ensure all data is captured accurately and in the required format
  • Conduct systematic field observations, measurements, crop assessments, and sample collection activities — applying rigorous scientific methodology to ensure all trial data is accurate, reproducible, and suitable for analysis and reporting
  • Analyse trial data collected in the field — contributing to data verification, quality checking, and preliminary analysis activities that support the Trials Manager in preparing comprehensive trial reports and client deliverables
  • Maintain meticulous trial records — ensuring all field notebooks, digital data entries, application records, and sample logs are complete, accurate, and organized in accordance with SGS’s data integrity and trial management standards

Stakeholder Relations & Team Collaboration

  • Build and maintain positive, professional, and trust-based relationships with growers, farm managers, clients, and partner organizations at all trial sites visited — representing SGS with professionalism, technical credibility, and agricultural expertise
  • Collaborate effectively with the experienced Trials Manager and broader SGS Natural Resources agriculture team — participating in trial planning discussions, progress reviews, and technical knowledge-sharing activities
  • Communicate trial progress, site conditions, practical challenges, and data quality observations clearly to the Trials Manager — ensuring timely and well-informed decision-making on all active trials
  • Represent SGS’s commitment to high-quality, integrity-driven agricultural research at every farm, field site, and client interaction — embodying the company’s “when you need to be sure” brand promise in all professional activities

Qualifications & Requirements

Educational Requirements

  • A degree (or equivalent practical experience) in Agriculture, Crop Science, Horticulture, Plant Science, Environmental Science, or a closely related life science field — required as the minimum qualification for this SGS Agricultural Trials Specialist role
  • Any additional certifications, training, or experience in pesticide application (PA1/PA2 certificate of competence), FACTS fertilizer advisory, or BASIS agrochemical advisory are considered valuable additions for this field-based research role

Experience & Attributes

  • A genuine interest in field-based agricultural and horticultural research — this is a role for someone who genuinely loves working outdoors, engaging with crops and growers, and contributing to the scientific evidence base that supports UK agricultural progress
  • Strong organizational skills and confidence working independently in the field — with the self-discipline, practical problem-solving capability, and time management effectiveness to manage trial sites, schedules, and data across multiple concurrent research projects
