Position Overview
The Farm Supervisor at J.R. Simplot Company is responsible for supervising and coordinating the activities of a farm work crew involved in all stages of crop production — from soil preparation and planting through to irrigation and harvesting. You will operate farm equipment, direct worker assignments, maintain safety compliance, oversee winter maintenance tasks, and provide hands-on support to crew members. Key Responsibilities
Farm Equipment Operation & Crop Production
- Operate farm equipment to perform key farming functions including discing, plowing, ripping, planting, spraying, and cultivating to prepare soil and plant crops on schedule
- Ensure all equipment operations are conducted safely, efficiently, and in line with farm production timelines
- Support smooth field operations across all growing seasons and crop management cycles
Farm Crew Supervision & Safety Compliance
- Direct job assignments for farm workers and ensure all personnel follow established safety procedures and operational guidelines
- Assist less experienced equipment operators and farm workers with new tasks to maximize productivity and minimize training costs
- Analyze and resolve work problems quickly to improve efficiency and effectiveness of employee work hours
Equipment Maintenance & Winter Farm Operations
- Examine farm equipment regularly for malfunctions and schedule preventive maintenance service to reduce costly downtime
- Perform minor mechanical repairs to farm equipment and machinery as needed
- Carry out a variety of essential maintenance tasks during winter months to ensure the farm is ready for the next growing season
Irrigation System Management
- Apply demonstrated knowledge of pivot irrigation systems, including hands-on repair and routine maintenance responsibilities
- Oversee irrigation scheduling and operation to support optimal crop growth and water use efficiency
Qualifications & Requirements
Education & Experience
- Associate’s degree (AA) or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school, or one to two years of related experience and training, or an equivalent combination of both
- Demonstrated knowledge of pivot irrigation systems’ repair and maintenance is required
- Basic computer skills are necessary for reporting and operational record-keeping
Skills & Abilities
- Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating manuals, and maintenance procedure documents
- Strong mathematical ability including application of fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to real farming situations
- Ability to solve practical problems and manage a variety of variables in dynamic, real-world farm environments
- Valid Driver’s License held and maintained in good standing is mandatory for this role
Physical Requirements
- Ability to regularly sit while operating a pickup truck and occasionally stand, walk, climb, balance, stoop, and crawl as farm duties require
- Must be able to occasionally lift and move up to 25 lbs, frequently lift up to 50 lbs, and occasionally lift more than 100 lbs
- Comfortable working regularly near moving mechanical parts, in outdoor weather conditions, and with occasional exposure to fumes and chemicals
