Position Overview
This Agriculture Program Assistant position at Fort Valley State University is responsible for the growth and development of edible trees, shrubs, vine fruit, and vegetables, along with the care of farm animals on campus. The role includes assisting with animal and plant production programming, demonstration site maintenance, and the upkeep of Extension facilities, tractors, vehicles, and other equipment, while working closely with the broader FVSU team.

Key Responsibilities
Plant & Crop Care
- Plant and establish trees, shrubs, and other plants such as vegetables
- Provide maintenance and care for all established plants on the farm sites
- Harvest fruits and vegetables from campus farm sites
- Monitor irrigation systems on the organic production farm site
Animal Care
- Provide maintenance and care for all animals on the farm sites
- Establish and maintain all necessary fencing required for animal sites
- Support day-to-day animal husbandry and welfare needs
Programming, Demonstration & Site Maintenance
- Assist with programming and demonstration site maintenance related to animal and plant production
- Support trainings, farm tours, and workshops for students and the community
- Assist with the management and marketing of animal and crop production
Facilities & Equipment Support
- Assist in the upkeep of Extension facilities, tractors, vehicles, and other equipment
- Establish and maintain fencing across plant and animal sites
- Complete other assignments as needed to support farm operations
Qualifications & Requirements
Minimum Qualifications
- High School diploma
- Interest in working with plants and animals
- Must have a valid driver’s license and clean driving record
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree
- Ability to operate farm equipment, including tractors, mowers, weed eaters, and trimmers
Working Conditions
- Some travel may be required within the state of Georgia to prepare, establish, maintain, and harvest crops and care for animals
- Minimum of 40 hours per week; some overtime may be required
- Working environment is primarily outdoors
