Position Overview
The Agronomy Technician at Vylor’s Hawaii Research Center in Waimea, Kauai supports all agronomy efforts necessary to reliably produce high-quality seed for the research organization. This hands-on, field-based role involves working across multiple functions within the Agronomy Department — from IPM spray operations and farm equipment operation to crop scouting, chemical inventory management, data entry, regulatory record tracking and cross-team collaboration on pollination, cover crop planting, drip tape removal and other seasonal activities. No two days are the same on the Garden Island.

By managing IPM programs, operating farm equipment safely, scouting crops for pests and disease, maintaining chemical inventory, tracking regulatory records and supporting cross-functional agronomy activities, you directly enable the research breakthroughs in gene editing, molecular breeding and crop science that will help farmers feed the world for generations to come.
Key Responsibilities
Farm Equipment Operation & IPM Spray
- Assist in scheduling, coordinating and operating farm and spraying equipment — including sprayers and tractors — always ensuring proper use of PPE and full compliance with product label directions.
- Assist with spraying, chemigation, posting WPS signs, cleaning equipment, replacing nozzles and performing all related IPM spray activities across research fields.
- Spray fence lines and fallow areas as required to maintain site hygiene and crop protection standards.
- Assist with the deployment of new equipment for IPM and agronomy programs as directed by the supervisor.
Chemical & Pesticide Management
- Maintain chemical inventory, an orderly pesticide storage room and all required safety stations across the research facility.
- Assist with IPM chemical inventory management and tracking — ensuring accurate records of all pesticide usage and stock levels.
- Ensure all chemicals are applied strictly in accordance with chemical labels, regulatory requirements and company safety protocols.
- Track and enter data in databases for all regulatory activities related to pesticide application and chemical management.
Crop Scouting, Data Entry & Field Support
- Conduct crop scouting across research fields to monitor for pests, disease, weeds and other agronomic issues — reporting findings to the supervisor promptly.
- Assist with data entry in Agronomy Databases and support the printing and posting of WPS records.
- Provide input to the supervisor and assist with short-term and long-term agronomy planning activities.
- Assist with developing field protocols and support other groups with tasks including cover crop planting, mowing, crop destruction, drip tape removal, hand weeding, UTV/backpack spray, netting activities and pollination during busy seasons.
Equipment Maintenance & Safety
- Maintain all farm and spray equipment in proper and safe working condition — conducting routine checks and flagging maintenance needs promptly.
- Participate in personal development activities as part of a performance management and development plan.
- Complete miscellaneous tasks as assigned by the supervisor to ensure smooth, efficient research field operations year-round.
What Skills You Need
Education & Experience
- High School Diploma or GED required — or willingness and ability to obtain GED within 12 months of hire.
- 2–4 years of tropical agriculture experience in IPM spray and farm equipment operation preferred.
- Valid driver’s license required — CDL preferred, or willingness to obtain. Ability to tow trailers (CMV).

- Proficient in computers with the ability to utilize Microsoft Office products for data entry, record-keeping and communication.

- Tolerance and genuine ability to work in an outdoor tropical agriculture setting — including heat, humidity and varied weather conditions.
- Flexibility to work evenings, weekends and/or holidays during seasonal peaks and based on field needs.
- Ability to occasionally lift 20–40 lbs as part of daily field activities.
- Experience with drone operation or assistance in drone operation is preferred.
