Position Overview
CMA CGM is hiring a Cargo Operations Officer (f/m/d) at its Hamburg city centre office on a fixed-term basis. You will work in very close cooperation with the centralised internal service centre, agency-level vessel operations, cargo readiness, transhipment, and customer service teams, as well as head office line operation and cargo flow teams, and external vendors and partners including husbandry agents, terminal operators, APL, and other partner lines. Key Responsibilities
Centralised Service Centre Coordination
- Work in very close, daily cooperation with CMA CGM’s centralised internal service centre — handling information requests related to cargo operation matters in German ports and ensuring operational queries are resolved accurately and on time
- Monitor the reliable execution of cargo operations from the centralised service centre — verifying performance against agreed service level agreements and escalating any deviations that could impact port call or cargo delivery commitments
- Serve as the focal point for handling and delegating special and sensitive cargo requests for German ports — including dangerous goods, out-of-gauge cargo, high-value shipments, and time-critical transhipment cases requiring specialist coordination
- Coordinate with agency-level teams across vessel operations, cargo readiness, transhipment, and customer service — maintaining clear, consistent communication that ensures alignment across all operational functions serving German ports
Cargo Operations Reporting & Analysis
- Prepare and regularly update various cargo-related operations reports for German ports — providing management, head office cargo flow teams, and partner lines with accurate, timely, and well-structured operational data and performance insights
- Provide backup support for monitoring and analysis of port call reports — ensuring continuity of reporting coverage and maintaining the quality and consistency of port performance data across CMA CGM’s German port operations
- Apply very good analytical skills to work effectively with high volumes of cargo operations data and information — identifying patterns, tracking operational trends, and flagging emerging issues before they escalate into significant disruptions
- Handle various cargo operations projects with internal and external stakeholders — managing project timelines, coordinating cross-functional input, and delivering clear, actionable outputs that improve cargo execution processes in German ports
Container & Cargo Safety, Security & Incident Management
- Take operational responsibility for execution and coordination of container and cargo safety and security incidents — including damaged container management, cargo loss incidents, and security events affecting CMA CGM operations at German ports
- Coordinate with terminal operators, husbandry agents, and relevant internal teams to manage incident responses professionally — ensuring timely containment, documentation, and resolution of all cargo safety and security matters
- Maintain accurate incident records and prepare structured reports for management review — supporting post-incident analysis and contributing to continuous improvement initiatives that reduce future safety and security risks in port operations
- Liaise with head office line operation and cargo flow teams on operational incidents — ensuring global teams are informed of significant German port cargo events and that appropriate operational decisions are made with full situational awareness
Multi-Stakeholder Coordination & Partner Management
- Coordinate closely with external vendors and partners including husbandry agents, terminal operators, APL, other alliance partner lines, and OA (other agents) — managing relationships professionally and resolving day-to-day operational issues efficiently
- Attend and contribute to operational meetings with internal and external stakeholders — representing the Hamburg cargo operations function clearly and providing expert input on German port cargo matters and service delivery
- Manage multiple concurrent workstreams across different departments and external parties — demonstrating strong project management ability, stress-resistance, and consistent professionalism under the time pressure of a global shipping operations environment
- Maintain excellent communication standards across all interactions — both written and spoken English — ensuring professional, accurate, and timely information exchange with Hamburg colleagues, centralised service centre teams, and international stakeholders
Qualifications & Requirements
Educational Requirements
- Certified shipping agent (Schifffahrtskaufmann/-frau) or forwarding merchant (Speditionskaufmann/-frau) qualification is the primary educational pathway for this Cargo Operations Officer role at CMA CGM Hamburg
- A degree in shipping, logistics, or a related field is also fully acceptable — candidates with academic qualifications in maritime or logistics disciplines will receive equal consideration alongside vocationally trained applicants
