Position Overview
The Chemical AI Safety Annotator / Subject Matter Expert evaluates AI-generated responses to chemistry-related prompts, classifies content as Benign, Dual-Use, or Adversarial, assesses technical accuracy and safety, compares and ranks competing AI responses, identifies errors, omissions, and safety concerns, writes expert reference responses, and participates in quality review and calibration sessions. The role draws on real-world experience in synthetic or analytical chemistry, toxicology, chemical and process safety, hazardous materials, exposure assessment, regulatory work, or chemical security — applied to improving how AI systems respond in sensitive scientific contexts.
Why This Role Matters: As a Chemical Safety Expert evaluating AI responses, you are one of the human safeguards that make AI systems trustworthy in a high-stakes scientific domain. Your expertise helps ensure that AI gives accurate, helpful chemistry information while recognising where a response could be unsafe or misused. Your classifications and expert reference answers teach AI systems to draw the line correctly, your error and omission spotting raises answer quality, and your participation in calibration keeps evaluation standards consistent — making your professional judgment genuinely valuable to AI safety.
Key Responsibilities
AI Response Evaluation & Technical Assessment
- Evaluate AI-generated responses to chemistry-related prompts for technical accuracy, completeness, and appropriateness
- Assess whether each response is safe, responsible, and consistent with professional chemical-safety standards
- Identify errors, omissions, and safety concerns in AI outputs and document them clearly for the review team
- Apply real-world chemical expertise and professional judgment to every evaluation task
Content Classification & Response Ranking
- Classify content as Benign, Dual-Use, or Adversarial according to project guidelines and expert judgment
- Compare multiple AI responses side by side and rank them on accuracy, helpfulness, and safety
- Explain ranking decisions with concise, well-reasoned written justifications
- Flag ambiguous or borderline cases for discussion during review and calibration
Expert Reference Writing & Quality Review
- Write expert reference responses that model accurate, safe, and genuinely helpful chemistry answers
- Participate in quality review sessions to maintain consistency across the annotation team
- Join calibration exercises to align evaluation standards with other subject matter experts
- Incorporate feedback from reviewers to continuously improve annotation quality
