Position Overview
As Microbiology Quality Control Specialist at Julphar in Abu Dhabi, you will be an essential member of the QC laboratory team — responsible for executing a comprehensive range of microbiology testing activities on raw materials, in-process samples, finished pharmaceutical products, water systems, environmental monitoring samples, and utilities. Your work will be conducted in strict accordance with GMP standards, standard operating procedures (SOPs), pharmacopoeia methods (BP, USP, EP), and Julphar’s rigorous data integrity requirements. You will maintain meticulous laboratory records, participate in internal and external audits, investigate and document out-of-specification (OOS) and out-of-trend (OOT) results, and contribute to the continuous improvement of the QC microbiology laboratory’s methods, systems, and compliance culture. Key Responsibilities
Pharmaceutical Microbiology Testing
- Conduct comprehensive microbiology testing activities on raw materials, in-process samples, finished pharmaceutical products, water systems, environmental monitoring samples, and clean utility samples — in strict accordance with GMP requirements and validated pharmacopoeial methods
- Perform sterility testing, bioburden testing, microbial limits testing, endotoxin/LAL testing, environmental monitoring, and water testing activities — applying appropriate BP, USP, and EP methods as required by the product’s registered specifications
- Operate, calibrate, and maintain microbiology laboratory instruments and equipment — including incubators, autoclaves, laminar flow cabinets, colony counters, LAL readers, and environmental monitoring equipment
- Prepare and verify culture media, reagents, and test materials — ensuring all materials are correctly prepared, identified, tested for growth promotion, and within their validated use-by parameters before testing begins
GMP Compliance, Data Integrity & Documentation
- Maintain full compliance with GMP standards and Julphar’s data integrity policies throughout all laboratory activities — ensuring that all data is accurate, attributable, legible, contemporaneous, original, and complete (ALCOA+)
- Maintain accurate, complete, and GMP-compliant laboratory records — including worksheets, logbooks, instrument calibration records, environmental monitoring logs, and test result reports
- Review and verify laboratory data and test results for accuracy and compliance — identifying any discrepancies, data errors, or anomalies and escalating them through the appropriate quality channels immediately
- Follow all applicable standard operating procedures (SOPs), batch manufacturing records (BMRs), and laboratory control procedures — contributing to the revision and improvement of SOPs as directed by the QC Manager
OOS/OOT Investigation, Audits & Regulatory Compliance
- Investigate and document Out-of-Specification (OOS) and Out-of-Trend (OOT) laboratory results — following Julphar’s OOS investigation procedure and relevant pharmacopoeial guidance to reach well-supported, documented conclusions
- Participate actively in internal quality audits, external regulatory inspections, and customer audits — preparing required documentation, organizing laboratory areas, and responding to auditor queries professionally and accurately
- Support regulatory submissions by providing accurate microbiology test data, validation summaries, and compliance documentation as requested by the Regulatory Affairs or Quality Assurance teams
- Stay current with evolving GMP requirements, pharmacopoeial updates, and applicable UAE MOHAP and international pharmaceutical regulatory standards — communicating relevant changes to the QC Microbiology team
Environmental Monitoring, Water Testing & Continuous Improvement
- Execute the environmental monitoring programme for clean rooms, controlled areas, and manufacturing zones — collecting air samples, surface samples, and personnel monitoring samples and analyzing results against established alert and action limits
- Conduct routine and out-of-routine pharmaceutical water testing — including purified water, water for injection (WFI), and process water samples — ensuring results meet pharmacopoeial and in-house quality specifications
- Identify trends in environmental monitoring, water system, and product testing data — reporting concerns to the QC Manager and supporting root cause investigations and corrective action implementations
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives within the QC Microbiology laboratory — including method improvements, testing efficiency enhancements, and the development of QC team knowledge and capability
Qualifications & Requirements
Educational Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree (BSc) or Master’s degree (MSc) in Microbiology, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Biotechnology, Life Sciences, or a closely related biological science discipline
- Master’s degree candidates or those with additional pharmaceutical GMP training and certifications will be given priority consideration during the selection process
Technical Knowledge & Skills
- Sound theoretical and practical knowledge of pharmaceutical microbiology techniques — including sterility testing, bioburden analysis, microbial identification, endotoxin testing, and environmental monitoring
- Proficiency in GMP standards and data integrity principles relevant to pharmaceutical quality control laboratory environments — including understanding of ALCOA+ data integrity requirements
- Familiarity with pharmacopoeial methods (BP, USP, EP) for pharmaceutical microbiology testing — able to apply and interpret pharmacopoeial procedures accurately and independently
- Experience with OOS/OOT investigation procedures, audit participation, and regulatory inspection readiness activities in a pharmaceutical QC laboratory environment
