The role involves unloading trucks at dump stations, operating rail and locomotive equipment, running PLC systems for rail shed operations and supporting extended unloading and loading activities during peak harvest seasons. Workers are responsible for ongoing facility housekeeping including cleaning bins, pits and equipment to maintain safe and efficient operations — all within a strong safety culture that requires attention to detail, adherence to procedures and a proactive approach to safe grain movement across multiple operational areas of the site.

Key Responsibilities
Grain Receiving, Inspection & Unloading
- Perform grain inspection activities including probing trucks at the facility entrance — ensuring incoming corn and wheat loads are correctly sampled and inspected for quality, moisture, foreign matter and other key parameters before unloading commences.
- Operate grain handling and receiving equipment at truck dumps — efficiently unloading incoming grain trucks, directing product flow into the facility’s receiving systems and monitoring the unloading process for safety and operational efficiency throughout each shift.
- Support extended unloading and loading activities during peak harvest seasons — demonstrating the scheduling flexibility and physical stamina required to maintain high-throughput grain operations during the intense, time-critical demands of Michigan’s corn and wheat harvest periods.
Rail, Locomotive & PLC System Operations
- Operate rail and locomotive equipment at the Standish facility — supporting grain loading and movement activities that require safe, competent operation of on-site rail infrastructure under established safety protocols and operating procedures.
- Run PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) systems for rail shed operations — monitoring automated process controls, responding to system alerts and ensuring rail shed grain handling processes operate correctly and safely throughout each operational period.

Qualifications & Requirements
Education & Experience
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent — preferred but not always required; The Andersons welcomes motivated candidates with practical farm, construction or general labor experience and a genuine willingness to learn grain operations.
- Previous grain operations experience is preferred — but not mandatory. Candidates with farm background, agricultural labor history, construction or comparable physical labor experience are well-suited to succeed in this role with appropriate on-the-job training.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand for extended periods of time throughout a full grain operations work shift — essential for truck dump operations, inspection activities and facility housekeeping tasks.
- Ability to frequently lift, push and pull loads of up to 75 pounds — required for grain handling, equipment operation and facility maintenance activities across the Standish site.
- Must be able to climb, stoop and kneel at heights of up to 180 feet — grain bin inspection, equipment maintenance and facility upkeep activities require physical capability and comfort working at significant heights.
