Position Overview
The Senior Mechanical Design Engineer at PowerTech in Abu Dhabi is a technically expert and project-influential engineering role within the company’s turbojet and turbofan propulsion development programmes. You will design and optimise gas turbine static and rotary systems for life, weight, manufacturability, and cost — spanning compressors, turbines, shafts, disks, bearing systems, accessory gearboxes, and stationary structures. You will carry out Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T), define assembly procedures, prepare engineering drawings, perform FMECA, generate testing guidelines, review simulations, identify project risks, and actively develop junior engineers. Operating with proficiency in design tools such as SolidWorks or Siemens NX and PLM systems including Teamcenter or Windchill, you will bring the rare combination of hands-on engineering depth and programme management awareness that senior propulsion development roles demand.
Why This Role Matters: As Senior Mechanical Design Engineer at PowerTech, you are at the technical frontier of UAE defence propulsion engineering — designing the gas turbine components that will power next-generation microjet and turbofan systems for one of the MENA region’s most strategically important technology companies. Every compressor blade stage you optimise, every shaft you size, every FMECA you execute directly determines whether a propulsion programme delivers on its safety, weight, and performance targets. You will mentor junior engineers who will look to your experience and technical judgement as their benchmark, contribute to programme risk management that protects programme timelines and budgets, and build a professional legacy within the UAE’s most ambitious and well-resourced aerospace and defence engineering environment.
Key Responsibilities
Gas Turbine Component Design & Optimisation
- Design and optimise gas turbine static and rotary systems — including compressors, turbines, shafts, disks, bearing systems, and stationary structures — with rigorous attention to life, weight, manufacturability, and cost
- Design and size rotating components including disks, shafts, couplings, and connection elements — applying structural integrity, fatigue, and thermal analysis principles to ensure components meet programme requirements
- Design gas turbine externals and accessories — including fuel pumps, oil pumps, bleed lines, and associated support systems — ensuring integration with the core turbojet or turbofan architecture
- Design and size accessory gearbox and shaft power off-take systems — optimising mechanical power extraction while maintaining overall engine performance, weight, and reliability targets
GD&T, Drawings & Manufacturing Guidelines
- Carry out Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) tasks — defining precise dimensional and geometric requirements that ensure components can be manufactured and assembled to design intent consistently
- Define assembly procedures for gas turbine sub-assemblies and major assemblies — ensuring maintainability, safety, and dimensional integrity are embedded in the build sequence
- Prepare engineering drawings to the standard required for manufacture, inspection, and test — using SolidWorks, Siemens NX, or equivalent professional CAD environments to the appropriate industry standards
- Define manufacturing guidelines for gas turbine components — ensuring producibility, material selection, process compatibility, and cost-efficiency are considered at the design stage rather than corrected during production
FMECA, Safety Analysis & Risk Management
- Carry out FMECA (Failure Mode, Effects, and Criticality Analysis) to support the safety and operability assessments of gas turbine components and systems throughout the development programme
- Support FRACAS (Failure Reporting, Analysis, and Corrective Action System) activities — ensuring test failures, field issues, and design non-conformances are systematically investigated and resolved
- Identify project technical risks — developing mitigation plans that protect programme schedule, cost, and safety outcomes in collaboration with programme management and peer engineers
- Review designs, simulations, and structural analysis outputs — generating testing guidelines that ensure prototype and production components are validated thoroughly before programme milestones
Junior Engineer Development & Team Collaboration
- Support other team members and actively develop junior mechanical design engineers — providing technical guidance, constructive feedback, and mentorship that accelerates their professional growth
- Review the work of junior engineers — assessing design quality, analysis correctness, and drawing standards — and providing specific, actionable feedback that raises the team’s overall engineering capability
- Communicate effectively with team members, clients, and vendors — using strong written and verbal English to present technical decisions, design rationale, and programme status clearly and credibly
- Contribute to a collaborative, high-performance engineering culture — sharing knowledge openly, challenging design assumptions constructively, and supporting the team in delivering programme objectives on time
Qualifications & Requirements
Education
- Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline — required for this senior propulsion engineering position
- Advanced academic or professional qualifications in gas turbine thermodynamics, structural mechanics, or propulsion systems are a meaningful advantage
Experience Requirements
- 5 to 15 or more years of professional experience in gas turbine propulsion mechanical design, structural integrity, and/or heat transfer — across turbojet, turbofan, or comparable propulsion development programmes
- Demonstrated experience in one or more of: compressor and turbine component design, rotating disk and shaft sizing, accessory gearbox design, FMECA, FRACAS, or fuel/oil system accessories
- Experience in a development engineering environment — ideally from aerospace, defence, or advanced propulsion programmes where precision engineering and programme management overlap
Technical Skills
- Proficiency in at least one professional 3D CAD design package — SolidWorks, Siemens NX, or equivalent — used daily for gas turbine component design, drawing production, and assembly definition
- Experience with PLM tools such as Teamcenter or Windchill — for engineering change management, document control, and programme data management in a structured development environment
- Experience in FEA (Finite Element Analysis) or lower-order simulation methods — applied to structural integrity, fatigue, thermal, or vibration analysis of gas turbine components
- Experience in programming using C, MATLAB/Simulink, or similar — for component sizing tools, design automation scripts, or performance modelling in propulsion development contexts
- Awareness of state-of-the-art technologies in materials, aerodynamics, and structural mechanics as they apply to mechanical design for gas turbine propulsion
- Fluent written and spoken English — required for all technical documentation, cross-functional communication, client interaction, and vendor engagement
