Position Overview
The Sr. Technician Agronomy at Reynolds American in Winston-Salem, NC is a full-time, hands-on agricultural research support role sitting at the intersection of field agronomy, greenhouse operations and plant science laboratory work. This professional assists with planning and executing on-farm field trials, maintains an organized greenhouse and laboratory environment, collects and manages research samples and data, coordinates laboratory sample submissions, ensures field and greenhouse supplies are always stocked and available and prepares final written research reports summarizing trial findings and project outcomes. The role requires a valid driver’s license, the ability to work outdoors for extended periods, overnight travel of up to 10 nights per year and the ability — or willingness — to obtain a North Carolina Pesticide Ground Applicator License.

Key Responsibilities
On-Farm Field Trials & Greenhouse Research
- Assist with the planning and execution of on-farm field trials — supporting agronomists and research scientists in establishing, maintaining and harvesting experimental plots across North Carolina agricultural locations.
- Manage greenhouse research operations — maintaining an organized, clean and efficient greenhouse environment that supports active plant science research and development activities.
- Perform physically demanding outdoor field work for extended periods — including planting, sampling, measurement, treatment application and harvest activities across trial sites.
- Travel overnight as needed (up to 10 nights annually) to support field trial activities at remote or rural agricultural research sites across North Carolina and surrounding regions.
Sample Collection, Data Management & Lab Coordination
- Collect, store and manage research samples, data and observations accurately — maintaining full traceability and data integrity across all field, greenhouse and laboratory research activities.
- Submit samples for laboratory analysis — coordinating with internal and external lab teams to ensure samples are correctly prepared, labelled, logged and dispatched on schedule.
- Maintain accurate, up-to-date data records and research observations using Microsoft Office and other relevant technology platforms — supporting data integrity for research reporting and analysis.
Supply Management & Workplace Organization
- Coordinate with team members to ensure all field and greenhouse supplies are ordered, stocked and readily available — preventing supply shortages that could disrupt active research programs.
- Maintain an organized, clean and efficient greenhouse and laboratory work environment — ensuring all research tools, equipment and materials are properly stored, labelled and accessible.
- Operate a personal or company vehicle safely and responsibly to access field trial sites and support research logistics across the assigned territory in North Carolina.
Research Documentation & Reporting
- Prepare and write accurate final research reports summarizing field trial findings, greenhouse research results and project outcomes — communicating results clearly to the agronomy research team.
- Contribute to research documentation by maintaining thorough, well-organized records of all trial activities, sample submissions, greenhouse operations and data collection activities throughout each research project.
- Apply strong organizational, verbal and written communication skills to support timely, accurate research reporting and effective cross-team project coordination within the agronomy department.
Qualifications & Requirements
Educational Requirements
- High school diploma, Associate degree or Bachelor’s degree in Agronomy, Biological Sciences, Soil Science, Greenhouse Management or a closely related agricultural or scientific field.
- Ability to obtain a North Carolina Pesticide Ground Applicator License — a practical licensing requirement for conducting pesticide applications at field trial sites.
Experience & Practical Requirements
- Ability to work outdoors for extended periods performing physically demanding agricultural tasks — this is a hands-on field and greenhouse role requiring physical stamina and adaptability to varied weather conditions.
