GSI Environmental Inc., a privately held, employee-owned environmental consulting firm headquartered in Houston, is looking for an Artificial Intelligence (AI) Engineer to help shape how AI and automation support the way the firm works. This is a rare chance to build a function from the ground up, bringing modern AI into everyday workflows to solve complex environmental problems. As AI Engineer, you’ll design and deploy AI-powered applications, assistants, and workflows; develop custom internal software and portals; evaluate new AI platforms and large language models and prototype high-value use cases; build dashboards and business intelligence tools for leadership and project teams; integrate systems through APIs, databases, and cloud services; create automated workflows that reduce manual effort; train colleagues to use AI tools responsibly; and help establish AI governance standards that protect confidential client, litigation, and government data. The role is preferably based at or near a GSI office, with Houston as the ideal location.

Scope: Technical project teams and corporate departments across GSI
Mission: Using AI to simplify workflows and support environmental solutions
AI Engineer Position Overview
The AI Engineer role at GSI Environmental is a hands-on position at the intersection of artificial intelligence, automation, and the firm’s everyday operations. You’ll design and deliver AI-powered applications, automations, dashboards, and data-driven tools that help people across the organization work more productively. The work begins with listening. You’ll partner with technical project teams and corporate departments to find where emerging technology can simplify a workflow, sharpen a decision, or remove a repetitive manual task. From there, you’ll build. That might mean an AI assistant that helps staff search and summarize technical knowledge, a document automation tool that cuts hours of routine work, a custom internal portal, or a business intelligence dashboard that gives leadership a clearer picture of project performance. Integration is a big part of the job, as you’ll connect business and technical systems through APIs, databases, and cloud services, and support data management and reporting across scientific, financial, and regulatory information. You’ll also keep an eye on the fast-moving landscape of large language models and automation platforms, prototyping promising ideas quickly and separating what works from what doesn’t. Training matters just as much as building. You’ll help colleagues adopt new AI tools with confidence and champion a culture of practical, responsible use. Because GSI handles confidential client, litigation, and government project data, governance is central. You’ll help develop standards for secure, ethical, and responsible AI use, and work with IT and leadership to shape a long-term technology and innovation roadmap. Helping solve environmental problems through better technology is the purpose that sits behind it all.
As AI Engineer, you’ll build depth in generative AI, retrieval-augmented generation, AI agents, and the practical engineering that makes these tools dependable in a professional setting, while growing your ability to explain technical ideas to people outside engineering. The ideal candidate holds a bachelor’s degree in computer science, software engineering, data science, information systems, or a related field, and brings hands-on experience with generative AI, LLMs, AI agents, or machine learning. Strong programming skills in Python, SQL, JavaScript, C#, or similar languages are expected, along with experience building dashboards in Power BI, Tableau, or comparable tools and integrating systems through APIs and cloud technology. Familiarity with data architecture, security, and governance is important, and experience with Microsoft Power Platform, which GSI uses within its Microsoft 365 environment, is a strong advantage. Experience building RAG applications, document automation, or AI assistants for knowledge work would be especially valuable, as would a genuine interest in environmental work. For AI engineers in Houston who want to apply their skills to meaningful problems, this role offers a rare blend of innovation, impact, and an employee-owned culture.
Why This Role Matters: As AI Engineer at GSI Environmental, you help shape how a respected environmental firm uses artificial intelligence, build AI assistants and automations that save real hours for colleagues, create the dashboards that guide leadership decisions, set the governance standards that keep sensitive data safe, work in an employee-owned culture that values growth, and advance a career in applied AI in Houston.
